Art 895 Research Papers
This case study begins with a brief description of my circumstances as a middle school art teacher, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and my research questions: How can art educators adapt CASEL/SEL within their art curriculum to improve students’ mental health and abilities to cope with stress and trauma? What specific therapeutic and CASEL Model procedures can be applied to an art curriculum that aids in the development of a child’s social and emotional development or learning? SEL and CASEL are defined and compared to art therapy/art therapy practices. A rationale …

Learning Through Social Media: A Case Study Of The Getty Center, Regan Fisher
Art 895 Research Papers
Social media is a powerful tool that allows for massive connectivity across the globe and is integral to how young people interact with each other and make sense of their world. During the COVID19 pandemic of 2020, social media was instrumental in connecting communities to museums and providing access during closures. This case study examines how The Getty Center in Los Angeles utilized social media with innovative, strategic thinking and engaging content to achieve their mission of educating the public and increasing awareness about the artifacts housed in their collection.
Encouraging Confident Art Making In The Primary Elementary Art Room, Morgan Hagan
Encouraging Confident Art Making In The Primary Elementary Art Room, Morgan Hagan
Art 895 Research Papers
This action research study observes artistic outcomes from students in kindergarten through third grade who display a range of artistic skill levels, and backgrounds. The purpose of this study is to explore what confidence looks like in student artwork and what pedagogical practices art teachers can use to help encourage that confidence by answering two central questions. What does confidence look like in student artwork? What pedagogical practices can art teachers use to encourage students to have confidence in art making?
Art And Its Importance To Social-Emotional Learning And Behavior Management In The Classroom, Ashley Joustra
Art And Its Importance To Social-Emotional Learning And Behavior Management In The Classroom, Ashley Joustra
Art 895 Research Papers
This case study examines the association between an arts education and social-emotional learning (SEL) and attempts to identify if an increased social competence positively affects behavior in the classroom. Education policies are explored as well as outcomes of SEL through art programs. Organizations promoting the SEL such as CASEL and educational plans highlighting art/SEL integration from the UChicago Consortium of School Research are studied. Behavior data from CUSD 300 in northwestern Illinois is examined in relation to art and SEL education.
Re-Engaging Students In Art History: An Action Research Study, Jenna Hermann
Re-Engaging Students In Art History: An Action Research Study, Jenna Hermann
Art 895 Research Papers
In this action research study, I examine different ways to re-engage students in the study of art history. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I sought out more effective and exciting ways to integrate technology when teaching art history to my eighth-grade students. I implement studentled learning strategies as students explore The Met’s website, focusing on the 1900-Present virtual exhibition. I consider if and how this virtual learning platform does or does not make learning about art history more engaging.
Modernist And Post-Modernist Paradigms: A Forged Art Education Curriculum, Raelissa Hovelson
Modernist And Post-Modernist Paradigms: A Forged Art Education Curriculum, Raelissa Hovelson
Art 895 Research Papers
The purpose of this study is to consider a curriculum that uses the best characteristics of both modernist and pos-tmodernist approaches to art education, and showcases artists that model the forged curriculum. A modernist approach to art education has students emulate the technical skills that has prevailed the Western culture of classical artists. A post-modernism approach is the idea that art education should be more about multiculturalism, social engagement, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Using a qualitative case study, a literature review is analyzed to understand both modernist and post-modernist paradigms. Through discussion, artists that model characteristics from both teaching approaches …
Art Activism In The Elementary Art Classroom: A Case Study, Julian Kramer
Art Activism In The Elementary Art Classroom: A Case Study, Julian Kramer
Art 895 Research Papers
This research is focused on the integration of art activism into the elementary art curriculum. It begins with an overview of four contemporary artists known for their activist works. A review of recent literature related to art activism and art education follows. While there were many articles discussing art activism in art education curricula, integrating art activism at the elementary level is not well documented. It concludes with a discussion of these artists and the recent literature, with suggestions for age-appropriate activism-based art projects for elementary students.
Combating Chronic Absenteeism With After-School Art Programs, Katherine Obholz
Combating Chronic Absenteeism With After-School Art Programs, Katherine Obholz
Art 895 Research Papers
Chronic absenteeism is a problem common within our education system, even more so in districts impacted by poverty. Consistent student attendance has and will continue to be an issue within our schools because it is difficult to pinpoint all the causes and issues that affect a student’s attendance. Despite this, art education, and after school art programs have been shown to improve student buy-in and help alleviate the inconsistent gaps in overall student attendance, behavior, test scores, life-skills, and improve participation within the classroom. This paper furthers the investigation by taking into consideration what the Boston and Chicago public afterschool …

A Case Study Of Learning Within A High School Community Art Partnership, Becky Weaver
Art 895 Research Papers
Secondary education is placing a greater emphasis in preparing students through real life work experience. This case study examines one specific partnership of Baldwin High School visual arts students interning with a local business. It seeks answers to what can be gained through this partnership and what value, if any, the partnership has to visual arts education. This case study will compare student reflective performance before and after students’ internship experience. In this qualitative study, I interview the adult mentors leading the students’ internship, examine students’ reflective practices through their written self-evaluations, and observe their experiences with critiques. This along …
Teaching Critical Consciousness With Contemporary Artists, Emily Ancona
Teaching Critical Consciousness With Contemporary Artists, Emily Ancona
Art 895 Research Papers
This study explores the level of critical consciousness of students by introducing contemporary artists who explore critical issues in their work. In this action research study, I examine my student’s artwork and written reflections before and after introducing them to multiple contemporary artists. I will explore the ways that these artists can encourage students to create artwork that has a higher level of critical consciousness.

Exploring Universal Design For Learning In The Art Classroom: Connecting Theory With Practice, Emily Heerten
Art 895 Research Papers
This case study focuses on the Universal Design of Learning (UDL), specifically its impact into integrating it into the art classroom. I studied UDL to better enhance and implement flexible instruction in my art classroom the past three years. In this case study, I reflected upon my own art classroom experiences during this time. UDL has been an important aspect in my art curriculum in an effort to increase opportunities for artistic academic achievement for each student. I examined UDL and how to implement it into the art classroom. This was to fill in gaps in education that is meant …

(b) 277 Ladder-style bracing, and
(c) an X-braced fan-style bracing similar to traditional European or so-called 'classical' acoustic guitars.
The CADD data set for each of the three (3) top bracing designs includes …
