Taking Root In The Silicon Forest: The Role Of High Technology Firms As Surrogate Universities In Portland, Oregon, Heike Mayer Jan 2003

Taking Root In The Silicon Forest: The Role Of High Technology Firms As Surrogate Universities In Portland, Oregon, Heike Mayer

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the evolution of the high technology industry in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region. The research explains how and why the region was able to grow a high technology industry cluster in the absence of a major world-class engineering and computer science research university. The research challenges the conventional assumption that a research university must be in place to create a high technology center. It was hypothesized that high technology firms functioned as surrogate research universities by attracting and developing labor, creating knowledge, and functioning as incubators for startup companies. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that a regional innovation milieu …

Swosu Fact Book Fall 2003, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the twelfth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The reader may note that several of the pages have been changed because of the recent reorganization of the academic colleges. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on …

Tenure And Promotion Considerations: An Analysis Of Cultural Issues, June Ovington, Thomas Diamantes, Douglas Roby, Charles Ryan Jan 2003

Tenure And Promotion Considerations: An Analysis Of Cultural Issues, June Ovington, Thomas Diamantes, Douglas Roby, Charles Ryan

Essays in Education

A purposive review of selected literature related to promotion and tenure in the university was conducted during the last year. From this literature review a constant comparative method of document data analysis was conducted. This method involves reviewing all documents, i.e. articles, handbooks, cases, field notes and interview data. The findings of our study suggest that the tenure and promotion process is impacted by differing values and literal interpretations after review of the candidates’ tenure file. We recommend that sustained review include senior colleagues and use of a productivity schematic to document professional activity over the tenure time frame.
