Existing research demonstrates the usefulness of multi-factorial approaches to the challenge of patient fall prevention (Spoelstra, Given, & Given, 2012; Wexler, D’Amico, & Rolston, 2011; Hart-Hughes, Quigley, Tatjana, & Scott, 2004). Some of the current strategies include assessment of a patient’s risk for falling based on a valid assessment instrument, management of a patient’s environment to provide a safe space, medication monitoring and management to avoid use of medications that could lead to falls, patient teaching, post-incident evaluation, and more. Implementation of these strategies is dependent upon patient care employees including nurses, nursing assistants, and physical therapists.

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) began as an experiment in connectivist learning in 2008 (Downes, 2012). While the number of MOOCs offered has risen, as has the number of universities offering MOOCs (Brown, Costello, Donkon, & Giolla-Mhichill, 2015), perceptions of the quality of MOOCs have been mixed (Bali, 2014; Peterson, 2014). From a perspective of Merrill’s first principles of instruction (2013), this qualitative study examined MOOC delivery platforms to determine what learning platforms and what specific characteristics may best promote and sustain MOOC quality. Through research, inquiry, and an evaluation of Recovery By Design, a ‘design therapy’ program that serves people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities, it is my assertion that the practice of design has therapeutic potential and can aid in the process of recovery. To the novice, the practices of conception, shaping form, and praxis have empowering benefit especially when guided by Conditional and Transformation Design methods together with an emphasis on materiality and vernacular form.

In countries where school systems have improved dramatically, pre-service teacher education has become more integrated with the regular school system. Aspiring teachers, while studying for their certification, are paid to practice under the guidance of an effective classroom teacher for a full year before seeking certification. Increasingly, evidence from the U.S. also indicates that such a model is effective. In fact, four persistent teacher quality challenges facing schools and districts can be positively impacted through the establishment of funded year-long pre-service clinical placement.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides states and districts with a renewed opportunity to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning in schools by explicitly incorporating well-designed year-long pre-service co-teaching placements (“residencies”) into state ESSA applications as an allowable and encouraged use of funds. While “preservice” teacher preparation is not frequently conceptualized as an allowable use of these federal funds, when well designed preparation programs include funded, year-long co-teaching residencies, they address many of the goals contained within ESSA and contribute to the systemic educational improvements sought by states and districts.

Medulla: A 2d Sidescrolling Platformer Game That Teaches Basic Brain Structure And Function, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Stephanie Vie

This article explores the design and instructional effectiveness of Medulla, an educational game meant to teach brain structure and function to undergraduate psychology students. Developed in the retro-style platformer genre, Medulla uses two-dimensional gameplay with pixel-based graphics to engage students in learning content related to the brain, information which is often pre-requisite to more rigorous psychological study. A pretest posttest design was used in an experiment assessing Medulla’s ability to teach psychology content. Results indicated content knowledge was significantly higher on the posttest than the pretest, with a large effect size. Medulla appears to be an effective learning tool. These …

This paper presents a qualitative study of twelve computer science lecturers’ experiences of curriculum design of several degree programmes during a time of transition from year-long to semesterised courses, due to institutional policy change. The background to the study is outlined, as are the reasons for choosing the research methodology. The main findings are presented and the implications of the study described. The methodology chosen was hermeneutic phenomenology. The data were the texts of interview transcripts of the twelve participant lecturers. I have noticed the Socratic method is a term often used in academic circles in a variety of syntactical contexts. I began to wonder how the nature of the Socratic method has changed over time. Would Socrates approve of the various meanings associated with his name today?

I conducted a detailed analysis of the historical text Alcibiades, seeking contemporary relevance. There is evidence that Socrates did not actually have a method, as it may appear. Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study aims to understand how perceptions of veterans and their military service influence instructor self-efficacy, and is important because enrollment of veterans into higher education is expected to continue increasing. In practice, universities should encourage a collaborative understanding between student veterans and faculty members to assist in producing positive educational outcomes, and policies should consider providing more resources for veterans at universities. Future research should strive to have a larger sample size, and use more neutral words that have fewer negative connotations.

The primary objective of college education in applied disciplines is that it is relevant to the expectations for new professionals entering the labor market. Academic institutions should therefore pay close attention to the ever-changing skills and knowledge expectations in the labor market. These trends are not easy to track, however. Surveys of new professionals about their experiences in their first jobs or surveys of employers about their experiences with new hires suffer from low response rates, nonresponse bias, and the one-time nature of survey research. As many as 42 percent of incoming freshman enroll in some type of remedial class whether it be reading, writing, or math (Brock, 2010).
