Finding The Path To College Completion: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Experiences Of First-Generation Students At A Technical College In Rural West Tennessee, Jacquene Rainey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study focused on the experiences of first-generation students attending a technical college in rural West Tennessee. The results of this study may identify barriers faced by students from these special populations and may also provide insight into the support systems that motivate these students to persevere. Although significant research has been conducted on first-generation and underrepresented students attending community colleges and four-year universities, there is a gap in the published literature pertaining to the lived experiences of students attending technical colleges, especially those living in rural areas.
First-generation college students face many challenges as they …

Evaluating The Impact Of A Flexible Delivery Model In Advanced Manufacturing Technologies On Key Stakeholders, Lisa Ann Hunt
Dissertations
Community colleges in the United States play a critical role in preparing students for employment in the workforce. Nationally, there is a severe shortage of trained workers to fill positions within the manufacturing industry. Manufacturers need to replace workers who retire and add employees to expand their businesses and the economy. State Community and Technical College (SCTC) began looking for ways to increase the number of students enrolled in manufacturing-related programs and increase the number of employees ready to meet the needs of employers
To increase access to its programs, the success of students in the programs, and to increase …

Computer science and cybersecurity have gained the attention of various stakeholders, industry representatives, educators, parents and students who are thinking about their future careers. Teaching computer science courses has moved into K-12 education, no longer introduced in the college classroom. There are various reasons for this trend. One is that in this way more children have access to the curriculum that integrates computer science principles, not just those undergraduate students in specific STEM majors. Other industries need different levels of computer science and cybersecurity education. There are various programs across the nation that are focusing on introducing these topics as …
Massive Resistance And The Origins Of The Virginia Technical College System, Richard A. Hodges Ed.D.
Massive Resistance And The Origins Of The Virginia Technical College System, Richard A. Hodges Ed.D.
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
The 1954 rulings in the United States Supreme Court cases of Brown v Board of Education was a landmark event in civil rights history. As momentous as the rulings were, they were not embraced by many Southern politicians. This was especially true in Virginia where Harry F. Byrd, Sr., U. S. Senator from Virginia, embarked on a campaign to massively resist court ordered school desegregation. Over the course of the next several years, Virginia's leaders would pass laws specifically designed to undermine the Brown rulings. These laws, known as massive resistance would, among other things, grant the governor the power …

Pre-Service Physics Teachers And Physics Education Research, David Rosengrant
David Rosengrant
Training pre-service teachers requires, among other things, content knowledge, pedagogical skills and pedagogical content knowledge. Teacher preparation programs have little, if any spare time to add more courses/activities to their program. However, I argue in this paper that we, as educators, must enhance the amount of physics education research in our pre-service physics teacher training programs. In this study, I analyze the results of two different types of exposure to physics education research (PER) from two different groups of pre-service physics teachers in our masters of arts and teaching program. The preliminary results show, for example that the PER helped …

Career-Technical Students In Baccalaureate Programs: Predictors Of The Intent To Persist And Satisfaction With Educational Pathways, Julie Uranis
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This research explores the intersections of descriptive attributes, expectations, and influences (independent variables) and the degree to which they predict the intent to persist and satisfaction (dependent variables) of students enrolled in career-technical programs at four-year institutions. Little research exists for this population, and nothing based on the theoretical frameworks of Bean and Metzner (1985) and Lent, Brown and Hackett (1994). Expecting a significant relationship among several factors contributing to the intent to persist for career-technical students in degree programs, this research explores predictors for persistence in this population. This research revealed that there are simpler relationships among the variables …

Gender Stereotyping Within Career And Technical Education : Exploring Relationships Among Gender, Coursetaking, And Outcomes Of High School Cte Students., Stephanie A. Fluhr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explored he relationships among gender, coursetaking, and student outcomes of high school CTE students. The variables analyzed within this study were selected based upon an extensive review of existing literature on gender, stereotypes, occupation, nontraditional careers, and CTE coursetaking and policy. The sample examined in this study came from a Midwestern state’s database of CTE students that were enrolled in high school CTE courses from 2010-2012. Operating under a theory that gender segregation with CTE leads to a continuance of gender segregation in the workforce at large, the purpose of this study was to add to the existing …

Postconflict governments and counterparts have collaborated to provide skills training to communities as a critical postconflict development strategy. In these undertakings, the role of community members remains largely undefined. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive case study was to understand the perceptions held by rural community members regarding the role they played in influencing government's policy priority for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a local human development strategy in postconflict Liberia. The conceptual framework was based on human capital theory and concepts of motivation and achievement. Fourteen participants were purposefully selected for the study. Data were collected …

Preparation Of Career And Technical Education Teachers For Working With Students Who Have Special Needs, Mary Sunisloe
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This research study looks at the preparation of Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers working with students who have special needs. If the CTE teachers have been prepared through formal education and updated training, participate in the IEP process, and have access to and use goals and objectives of students who have IEPs, then CTE teachers will feel prepared to work with students who have special needs. Specifically this study looked at three areas: how much formal education CTE teachers had as well as up-dated training for working with students who have special needs within the last twelve months; if …

A Catalyst For Educational Change: The Role Of Career And Technical Education In Georgia’S Statewide Educational Improvement Efforts, Anthony Chow, Mark Whitlock, Lucy Phillip
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
The Central Educational Center is a product of multiple visions, desires, and hopes. The ideal vision is outlined in a book entitled “The Eden Conspiracy” (Harless, 1997). Other perspectives include a requirement from local business that basic skills of high school graduates need to be rapidly improved, the desire of a growing local school system to provide costly industry-standard career-technical education to all high school students, the vision of a regional technical college to “dual enroll” high school students and make technical college a viable post-secondary option, and the hopes of a Governor looking for a viable model to support …
