Politics, Policies, And Procedures: The Iron Triangle Of Implementing Education Reform, Clint Reardon Jr
Politics, Policies, And Procedures: The Iron Triangle Of Implementing Education Reform, Clint Reardon Jr
Honors College Theses
Education is often seen as a living thing, something that should grow and change with time. However, for far too many people who experience education from both within the school structure and for those who experience education from outside the school structure it can often seem like the educational system is stagnate, dying, and in some cases dead. One shared reason for this perception is perceived barriers in education that stifle creativity and allow educational systems to grow, adapt, and change to meet the needs of the students they serve. This study set out to identify what those barriers are …

A Phenomenological Study Of Pastors Leaving Employment Due To Experienced Poor Person-Organization Fit, Stephen T. Buys
A Phenomenological Study Of Pastors Leaving Employment Due To Experienced Poor Person-Organization Fit, Stephen T. Buys
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and describe pastors’ experiences who have served full-time in a lead/senior pastor role in evangelical churches after having lost or left their employment as a result of experiencing poor person-organization fit. For this study, pastoral staff turnover was defined as the employment of full-time pastoral staff employed for at least one year who have resulted in voluntary or involuntary resignation from their place of employment because of value incongruence. In this phenomenology, the church is viewed as an educational institution, including similarities between pastoral roles and educator and administrator roles. As …

Applying Metamorphosis Philosophy To Revive The Abandoned Buildings, Fatima Ghosn, Ayman Afify, Hiba Mohsen, Maged Youssef
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The metamorphosis philosophy is related to architecture, for instance this translation is showcased in the transformation of spaces in buildings that is either done by the destruction or modification of the architectural product. Unfortunately, many buildings, structures and spaces are left abandoned because of changing situations, war, or natural causes. These abandoned buildings can increase the crime rate and leave lands covered in leftover spaces which can have drastic consequences on the environment. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to propose a set of design approaches that can apply the philosophy of metamorphosis in the revival of abandoned buildings …

Principals’ Perceptions Of Enabling And Hindering Behaviors, Rules, And Structures In New York State School Districts, Matthew W. Darby
Theses and Dissertations
There has been increasing recognition among researchers and practitioners that the demands of the principalship have become unsustainable. School districts play a pivotal role in supporting school leaders in the execution of their responsibilities. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to further uncover how school district bureaucracies enable and hinder the work of principals. In the quantitative phase of the study the researcher analyzed survey responses from 244 New York State principals to determine the extent to which district structures were perceived as hindering or enabling their work. In the qualitative phase, the researcher interviewed two principals, one …

Transactional Distances During Emergency Remote Teaching Experiences, Ma. Monica L. Moreno, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo, Johanna Marion R. Torres, Timothy Jireh Gaspar, Jenilyn L. Agapito
Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
The Transactional Distance Theory posits that successful remote learning occurs when teachers decrease psychological or transactional gaps. Narrowing the transactional distance can be achieved through a balance of appropriate course structure and dialogue, fostering healthy student autonomy in the process. This paper describes the Emergency Remote Teaching experiences of faculty and students of the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. It examines these experiences in the context of the transactional distance framework. Findings show that a sudden shift to remote learning mandates greater student autonomy, which increases transactional distance. Because of this, efforts by faculty to increase student-teacher dialogue …

The Ibc-Why Model: Juggling Structure And Rhetorical Theory In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Jessica Anne Cyphers
The Ibc-Why Model: Juggling Structure And Rhetorical Theory In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Jessica Anne Cyphers
Masters Theses
This thesis addresses the issue of structure in the composition classroom. In particular, it looks at the history of the five-paragraph essay and the scholarly debate that has surrounded it for more than fifty years. By doing a stasis analysis, the author discovers that scholars have been talking past each other at the level of definition. Based on this finding, the author proposes the development of a new organizational model—the Introduction-Body-Conclusion (IBC) model—by which student can improve their understanding of structure across genres. In addition, by applying the IBC model to the Composition 101 program at the University of Tennessee, …
The Alignment Of Student Support Services In Minnesota Pre-K-12 Public Schools, Jacqueline Trzynka
The Alignment Of Student Support Services In Minnesota Pre-K-12 Public Schools, Jacqueline Trzynka
Doctorate in Education
A significant amount of literature exists on student achievement, social emotional learning, student mental health, and related student developmental needs. There are recommendations and research about best practices and research around successful programs schools can utilize to address and support student needs. However, the author found in her research that there is very little, if any, research about how school districts organize and implement comprehensive systems to support these needs and even less about why they should. The research questions explore student support services structures, policies, processes and roles as they relate to supporting equitable student outcomes. The qualitative study …
Identifying Structure In Introductory Topology: Diagrams, Examples, And Gestures, Keith N. Gallagher
Identifying Structure In Introductory Topology: Diagrams, Examples, And Gestures, Keith N. Gallagher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Despite the prevalence of research in calculus, linear algebra, abstract algebra, and analysis in undergraduate mathematics, the teaching and learning of general topology is a largely unexplored area of research. Although enrollment in courses like linear algebra is often higher than that of topology, the study of students’ learning and understanding of topology is of great significance to the Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) community. Courses in topology present many students with their first experience in axiomatic reasoning and explicit interactions with mathematical structure, itself.
I present a thorough case study of Stacey, an undergraduate taking a first course …

The Wall Of Silence: Disrupting Kairotic Spaces, Victoria Jaye
The Wall Of Silence: Disrupting Kairotic Spaces, Victoria Jaye
Writing Center Analysis Papers
Every class has a balance of kairotic space where teachers have power and students accept that power within the confining space of the classroom. Power defines our world as well as our relationships to one another; without power there is no control which can be key to governing a classroom. Disruption of this power dynamic can open dialogue between teachers and students that might not have existed otherwise because students feel confined to the strictures binding their power creating a wall of silence. Using brainstorming and reflecting as well as peer tutoring, I experimented with breaking down the wall of …

Yitna Yuwana Lena Kena In Gogroke Reroncen Kembang Garing’S Novel By Tulus Setiyadi, Arauni Mayanfauli, Darmoko Darmoko
International Review of Humanities Studies
Language expressions in Javanese culture that contain a warning to someone at the moment and will do an activity or work are often formulated with the word structure: yitna yuwana lena kena. The idea in the phrase is usually related to ethical values (moral philosophy) how one must be careful in speaking, behaving, and acting so that someone gets the safety of life in the world. Conversely, if someone is not careful in speaking, acting, and acting undoubtedly will get problems in his life. Ethical values in this novel relate to moral teachings to a woman so that she always …
Latina/O College Students' Experiences At A Predominately White Research University, Maria Alicia Remaly
Latina/O College Students' Experiences At A Predominately White Research University, Maria Alicia Remaly
Doctoral Dissertations
Latina/o students’ access to higher education has increased over time; however, the graduation rates for this group (52%) remain lower than those for white students (63%) (National Center for Education Statistics, 2014). This low graduation rate presents a problem for the financial and social progress of the Latina/o population due to the key role that having a bachelor’s degree plays in the labor force. The purpose of this exploratory, qualitative study was to better understand the college experiences of Latina/o students in a predominantly white institution (PWI) in the state of Massachusetts. This study focused in key areas that are …
Performance Feedback: How Structure, Culture, And Agency Affects Feedback, Angelica Sleiman
Performance Feedback: How Structure, Culture, And Agency Affects Feedback, Angelica Sleiman
Dissertations
Federal and state mandates have placed an added pressure on teachers to demonstrate “effective” instructional practices. These mandates also affect the role of a principal, as an evaluator of “effective” instructional strategies, and as an instructional leader who continuously needs to build teacher capacity to satisfy these mandates. Accountability mandates promise to improve students’ academic performance but they have lacked professional development that would provide the support teachers and principals need to achieve success. Feedback is arguably a valuable mechanism to build teacher capacity and respond to accountability pressures, however, the implementation of feedback and its consequences for teacher’s professional …

Place value is a concept in which students in elementary school struggle and instruction and curricular materials continue to introduce and teach place value in a disconnected fashion. This study introduced place value through a modeling perspective, focusing specifically on using the bar model to represent units and quantity. The investigation piloted a place value module highlighting the use of the bar model in four first grade classrooms with high percentages of diverse learners, many from low-income families and with limited English language proficiency. The results indicated students successfully described the differences between units of 1 and 10 and could …

Collections are undergoing intense change and pressure from technology, budgetary uncertainties, and emerging perspectives on future approaches. Our case study -- drawn from our experiences as collections librarians -- examines these complex issues facing academic collections, large or small, across the profession. Through the development of “collections of distinction” within the local collection, collaborations and scholarly partnerships with colleagues and faculty, and advocacy for the importance of dedicated oversight to ensure that collections investments fulfill the academic mission, we explore possible solutions to the complicated issues defining contemporary collections practices.
