Van Dijk and colleagues present three cases to illustrate and discuss the relationship between medicalisation and overdiagnosis. In this commentary, I consider each of the case studies in turn, and in doing so emphasise two main points. The first is that it is not possible to assess whether overdiagnosis is occurring based solely on incidence rates: it is necessary also to have data about the benefits and harms that are produced by diagnosis. Editorial

The idea of a Special Issue of the International Journal of Psychophysiology focusing on research "down under" emerged in 2012 from discussions between the Society President (Robert Barry), the journal Publisher (Shamus O'Reilly), and the Editor-in-Chief (Connie Duncan). It was greeted with enthusiasm by the Society Executive, who set up an Editorial Committee to progress the project, beginning with establishment of timelines, evaluations of the conference abstracts accepted for presentation at the 2012 meeting of the Australasian Society for Psychophysiology, ASP2012, and critical scrutiny of each conference presentation. Many chapters in this book focus on contract research (hereafter CR), but mine differs from these in three respects. First, rather than focus on CR in its own right I want to situate it in a much wider landscape of knowledge production, circulation and consumption. My reason for doing so is simple: we cannot possibly form a view on the why and wherefore of CR unless we understand the broader epistemic context in which it currently exists.
