Social Studies has the potential to impact STEAM education in unrealized ways. It can have this impact by being meaningful, integrative, value-based, challenging, and active. This article examines teaching about Carolina African Runner peanuts and the history of Alabama’s agriculture. The introduction of peanuts to Alabama and the enslavement of African people cannot be removed from a lesson such as this – nor should it. It is through value-based education that social studies contributes the most to STEM and STEAM lessons. Latinas/os in Science & Engineering is a study of the patterns and trends of Latina/o doctorates in U.S. fields of STEM – Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. The study uses data from NSF and the US Department of Education to address these questions: What is the trend in doctoral degree completion in fields of STEM? What fields are pursued? What is the citizenship status of Latina/o doctorates? What are the baccalaureate origins of Latina/o doctorates? What roles do community colleges and Hispanic Serving Institutions play in serving Latinas/os?
