Elementary School Entrepreneurs, Annie Mcmahon Whitlock

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

In this paper, I describe the implementation of a project-based economics unit in a fifth-grade classroom in Michigan, titled One Hen. One Hen is a curricular unit designed to teach students about social entrepreneurship as a way for students to learn economic concepts while developing their own civic efficacy by engaging in a project where they design and run their own social business. These findings are part of a larger case study that examines one fifth-grade class’s experience with One Hen and what these students learned about the economic concepts of loans and entrepreneurship. Through the authentic experiences of project-based …

Microfinance: Combating World Poverty One Small Business At A Time, Alison Basney

Poverty is a major problem that reaches millions of people around the world. This purpose of this thesis is to show that microfinance is the ideal solution to the poverty problem by using research and evidence from …

Women's Empowerment In The Context Of Microfinance: A Photovoice Study, Camille Sutton-Brown May 2011

Women's Empowerment In The Context Of Microfinance: A Photovoice Study, Camille Sutton-Brown

Educational Policy Studies Dissertations

The assumptions underlying the relationships between microfinance and women’s empowerment are typically rooted in a financial paradigm, wherein the prevailing belief is that increases in economic resources necessarily lead to increases in women’s empowerment. This results in a conceptual erasure of the multi-dimensionality of empowerment and disregards the influences that microfinance has on women that extend beyond the economic sphere. This study explored how 6 women in Mali perceive and experience empowerment in relation to their participation in a microfinance program using photovoice. Photovoice is a qualitative methodology wherein participants document, reflect on, and represent their community and experiences using …

Latin American Studies Honors Projects

Abstract

This thesis answers the question: “What is the relationship between microfinance and neoliberalism?” by arguing that microfinance is an effective strategy for poverty eradication and community development only when it is coupled with public education and health for all members of society. Therefore, countries need to change their policies in these areas to ensure that microfinance institutions are successful in ending poverty. This thesis engages with scholars such as David Harvey and Mohammed Yunus who provide the theoretical framework for neoliberalism and microfinance and more importantly with Milford Bateman and Yogendra Bahadur Shakya who argue that microfinance can never …

Any discipline when it gets some popularity also becomes the subject of a constant review and even critical assessment. This can be positive sign of its growth and potentiality. It draws more attention. Pressure starts mounting up for ongoing improvements within its own framework.
