Catholic School Teachers' Perceptions Of Factors Related To Low Mathematics Achievement: A Qualitative Case Study, Andrzej Robert Piotrowski

This qualitative case study explored Catholic school teachers' perceptions of factors related to low mathematics achievement in second through fifth grade at three Catholic elementary schools in the Eastern United States. The three schools that participated in this study have varying degrees of ethnic diversity and vary in school enrollment. In 2015, all schools in the archdiocese produced standardized test results well above the national average in reading in second through fifth grades. In the same academic year, the gap between the national average and the district's second through fifth grade mathematics scores was significantly narrower. This study identifies the …

A Descriptive Study Of The Linguistic Abilities Of A Selected Group Of Low Achieving Hispanic Bilingual Students, Nancy Commins, Ofelia Miramontes

A study investigated the notion that bilingual students' low academic achievement may be due to semilingualism (having limited language skills) in each of the two languages, and the cognitive deficits that presumably result. The subjects were two boys and two girls from the fifth and sixth grades with low proficiency in either English or Spanish. Data were drawn from observations and audiotaping of natural and structured conversations and interviews were conducted with each family to provide information on the students' language performance both within and outside school. During the past 25 years, the country witnessed a dramatic transformation of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Actions by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), Congress, and the National Assessment Governing Board fundamentally changed NAEP's role in federal educational policy and the nation's schools. Developed in the 1960s through a privately funded initiative, NAEP began as a voluntary program run by a state consortium with financial support from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. It later became a congressionally legislated program administered by one of the country's premier testing organizations and overseen by a federally mandated public board. …

Investigating Factors Associated With Low Achievement Early In School: A Pilot Study, Kevin Sutherland

The purpose of the current study were to (a) examine the relationship between academic achievement and social competence in a sample of kindergarten and first grade students, and (b) investigate the interventions their teachers are using with low achieving students. Sixty kindergarten and first grade students and 15 teachers participated in this study. Results indicated significant differences between low achieving and typically achieving students on reading achievement and teacher reported academic competence. No other significant difference between groups were found. This practicum was designed to improve the verbal skills of English 11 General students taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The four verbal areas which were targeted for improvement were: (a) antonym skills, (b) analogy skills, (c) sentence completion skills, and (c) reading comprehension skills as wen as overall SAT verbal performance. After pretesting to determine the baseline verbal skills of students in these areas, the researcher implemented a variety of verbal activities in order to improve students' skills in these areas. In order to identify students at risk of failure in reading, a list was compiled in the school of factors held in common by students who had previously been retained in second grade. Cumulative folders were examined in order to gather the necessary data. At least 80 percent of the students in this part of the study were male, did not live with both parents, had failed the reading comprehension section of a local first grade minimum level skills test, and had visual sequential memory deficits. A Cross-Age Tutoring Program To Enhance Sight Word Recognition In Primary Resource Room Students, Janice Fay Langel

The problem addressed in this practicum was the significant deficit in recognition of sight word vocabulary among Primary Resource room students partially due to insufficient exposure to the words, little positive reinforcement, and a lack of consistent practice providing the correct responses. The method devised to remedy this deficit was to implement a ten week, cross-age tutoring program in which the Resource students were drilled for 10 minutes daily on the Dolch Basic Sight Word Vocabulary, the Queen's Vocabulary List, and supplemental word lists with positive verbal, and correct-response reinforcement by fifth grade tutors.
