The study investigated the influence of the library management system in managing library information resources by librarians in Ekiti state tertiary institutions. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The sample for the study comprised 80 librarians who were randomly selected through simple random sampling. Purpose of Library Management System (PLIS) and Challenges of Library Management System (CLMS) were the two instruments used to collect relevant data for the study. This article will discuss the importance of acknowledging the information practices of subcultural groups within library instruction and fostering an inclusive learning environment with the implementation of a workshop by comparing research databases with the popular fanfiction website, Archive of Our Own. By incorporating AO3 into library instruction, students’ interests and prior experiences were engaged by utilizing the principles of subcultural capital. The workshop utilized students’ knowledge of information searching from their personal lives and their interests to highlight similarities with academic research using examples such as filters, keywords, and author searching. This study investigated the strategies for curbing plagiarism by librarians in universities in the age of Information and Communication Technology in Nigeria. . The population comprised librarians in Universities in Nigeria. However, a total number of 15 Universities took part in the study and a random sampling technique was used to select 89 respondents. A self-constructed online questionnaire was designed and distributed to collect the data from the respondents. Nevertheless, 75 online questionnaires were valid and used for analysis. The need for the study was prompted by previous studies’ report that students make wrong career preferences due to poor information among other factors. Elementary School Library Collections: A Content Analysis Of Science Trade Books, Sandra W. Watson, Sheila F. Baker

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In this study, science trade books from the libraries of 10 elementary schools across the United States were evaluated using the modified Hunsader rubric for their overall quality pertaining to science content, literacy, and critical literacy criteria. Findings indicate that 62% of the books met the overall science content criterion, 99% met the overall literacy criterion, and 41% met the overall critical literacy criterion. The majority of science trade books in each school were life science books, and the majority of books across all schools were 18–23 years old, with many being much older. Implications and recommendations are provided.

Beginning in March of 2020, public school educators at all levels were thrown into a situation in which they were required to drastically alter pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning. The move from classroom-based instruction to a virtual platform, whether synchronous or not, was too often done on-the-fly and with mixed results. The purpose of this evaluation was to study the impact a school district’s summer library program had on summer reading loss. This study was conducted to analyze the design of the program and to determine what effect the program had on participants’ reading assessment scores as compared from spring (pre) to fall (post). Analysis of quantitative and qualitative data demonstrated the program was beneficial to students, parents, teachers, and school librarians. The findings show there is potential to use the summer library program to increase reading assessment scores; however, multiple doses of the program are necessary to achieve results. The …

This study examined the difference in school librarians’ self-efficacy between elementary, middle, and high school librarians. It also attempted to determine if self-efficacy levels in elementary school librarians can predict the overall average pass rates on the Virginia Standards of Learning Reading assessment for their schools. The study was conducted quantitatively using the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale that was sent out electronically to members of the Virginia Association of School Librarians contact list, using a convenience sample of 234 school librarians across the state of Virginia as well as the results of the Virginia Standards of Learning reading scores. …

Librarians in schools are expected to play an important role as literacy educators, and have a positive impact on young people’s literacy learning. However in the context of their diverse workload, relatively little is known about how this aspect of their role sits within its competing demands, and the exact scope of the literacy educator requirements. Using a hybrid approach to content analysis, this article analyses 40 recent job description documents to identify the nature and prevalence of different aspects of the role, and to explore the literacy educator aspect of this profession. The problem is a gap between public library technology needs, the skills librarians have with technologies, and the strategies they use to acquire skills. The purpose of this predictive, sequential, explanatory mixed method study was to examine public librarians' attitudes about learning new technology and their behavioral intention to adopt it. Library instruction varies in format but often manifests in the librarian teaching a single, isolated class session—what librarians refer to as a “one-shot.” Many challenges accompany this traditional format, including time-constraints, disengaged audiences, and little understanding on the part of the student as to how the library instruction integrates with course content. Purpose: This paper aims to evaluate the success of a Wikipedia editing assessment designed to improve the information literacy skills of a cohort of first-year undergraduate health sciences students.

Design/methodology/approach: In this action research case study (known hereafter as “the project” to differentiate this action research from the students’ own research), students researched, wrote and published Wikipedia articles on Australia-centric health topics. Students were given a pre- and post-test to assess levels of self-confidence in finding, evaluating and referencing information. Student work was also analysed in terms of article length and quantity and the type of information sources used.
