Online education programs are on the rise and institutions of higher learning are utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMS) to facilitate online learning. The Community of Inquiry (CoI; Garrison et al., 1999) framework identifies three categories of cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence to guide the development of online instruction and has been adopted by numerous institutions of higher learning. This article identifies instructional strategies conducive to the design of online presence using the CoI framework to ensure quality learning experiences in online special educator preparation programs. We address some of the features of LMS system tools present in Canvas …

Lms Problem-Posing Academic Relationships Between Faculty And Students: A Post-Intentional Phenomenological Study Of Dialogical Relationships In Asynchronous Online Courses, Sheri L. Prupis Jun 2023

Lms Problem-Posing Academic Relationships Between Faculty And Students: A Post-Intentional Phenomenological Study Of Dialogical Relationships In Asynchronous Online Courses, Sheri L. Prupis

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Drawing on Freire’s Engaged Pedagogy as a theoretical framework, I investigated the manifestation of dialogical relationships between faculty and students in fully asynchronous online courses. Employing a post-intentional phenomenological methodology, I examined how students and faculty held varying expectations for relationships in asynchronous online courses. The findings revealed that while students preferred transactional exchanges, faculty aspired to foster more profound and more enduring relationships with their students. This divergence can be partly attributed to the transactional exchange structure of Learning Management Systems (LMS), which heavily influences how faculty design and deliver courses and how students participate.

Science Assessments As A Learning Opportunity: Feedforward With Multiple Attempts, Emily Faulconer Mar 2023

Science Assessments As A Learning Opportunity: Feedforward With Multiple Attempts, Emily Faulconer

Publications

Feedback best practices support timely, high-quality feedback with application opportunity. Multiple attempts on assessments support learning gains. A learning management system can be used to automatically provide feedback for application on a future assessment attempt. Current research has not thoroughly investigated the student impacts or opinions on this combined strategy. In this study, students took a second attempt 46% of the time, scoring an average of 10.1% higher on their second attempt. More than 60% of students who failed their first attempt completed a second attempt. Students perceived the feedback as useful in preparing for their second attempt. Future research …

Student Device Usage, Learning Management System Tool Usage, And Self-Regulated Learning, Nancy Webb Dec 2022

Student Device Usage, Learning Management System Tool Usage, And Self-Regulated Learning, Nancy Webb

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is crucial to student success in online learning environments. Students enrolled in online courses at higher education institutions access courses through the learning management system (LMS) to complete coursework, interact with instructors and peers using various learning management system tools and multiple technological devices. Researchers frequently rely on surveys to identify how students self-regulate, but students often are not honest or over or under-estimate their SRL skills. Learning management system data analytics have recently provided opportunities to examine the frequencies and sequences of how learnings engage with tools and content in the online learning environment. The purpose …

Teachers in K-12 public schools have found themselves immersed in educational technology amidst a global pandemic that has shifted the landscape of instructional delivery. This study targeted intermediate elementary (3-5) teachers’ acceptance of an LMS as a central hub for student learning. While there is a volume of research to support the efficacy of an LMS at the secondary level and in higher education, there is minimal research to show its value-added in supporting intermediate learners at the elementary level. This explanatory sequential mixed methods study inquired to capture teachers’ perceptions and use of an LMS to support student learning. …

Critically Analyzing The Online Classroom: Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, And The Pedagogy They Produce, J.D. Swerzenski Sep 2021

Critically Analyzing The Online Classroom: Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, And The Pedagogy They Produce, J.D. Swerzenski

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Working from the crossroads of critical pedagogy and software studies, this study analyzes the means by which teaching technologies—in particular the popular learning management systems (LMS) Blackboard, Moodle, and Canvas—support a transmission model of education at the expense of critical learning goals. I assess the effect of LMSs on critical aims via four key critical pedagogy concepts: the banking system, student/teacher contradiction, dialogue, and problem-posing. From software studies, I employ the notion of affordances—what program functions are and are not made available to users—to observe how LMSs naturalize the transmission model. Rather than present a deterministic look at teaching technology, …

Educational Leaders, Professional Learning Communities, And Social Media, Ashley Johnson-Holder, Terrie Bethea-Hampton

Journal of Research Initiatives

Though social media is at the forefront of technology strategies in the effort to close the digital divide, many educators fail to find the benefit in platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and MeWe. On the other hand, for many educators, social media has become the “go-to” resource, now that face-to-face communication is decreasing and social media is becoming the popular platform for keeping audiences engaged and informed. Social media has the potential of giving educational leaders the opportunity of communicating with multiple users simultaneously. Since students, parents, faculty, and educational stakeholders are using social media; this makes it an excellent …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, the use of digital tools and technologies in educational institutions are continuing to generate large amounts of digital traces of student learning behavior. This study presents a proof-of-concept analytics system that can detect at-risk students along their learning journey. Educators can benefit from the early detection of at-risk students by understanding factors which may lead to failure or drop-out. Further, educators can devise appropriate intervention measures before the students drop out of the course. Our system was built using SAS ® Enterprise Miner (EM) and SAS ® JMP Pro.

Communicating Student Learning Progress: What Does That Mean And Can It Make A Difference?, Hilary Hollingsworth, Jonathan Heard Aug 2018

Communicating Student Learning Progress: What Does That Mean And Can It Make A Difference?, Hilary Hollingsworth, Jonathan Heard

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

Traditionally in schools, the main method of communicating students’ academic performance has been the summative end-of-semester report, and the focus of much of this communication has centred on reporting achievement against year-level standards. While semester reporting largely remains established practice, the advent of new school management systems has seen schools embrace a practice known as ‘continuous reporting’. Though well-intended, early analysis would suggest that the potential benefits of this relatively new process are inconsistently understood, and reveal a confusion between progressive instalments of feedback versus feedback on student progress. Such confusion may be indicative of other gaps in the organisational …

Learning management systems offer flexibility in assessments. In Canvas, questions can be pulled from pools, customizing each quiz. Canvas also allows unique feedback options. Unique feedback can be programmed for students whether they got the question correct or incorrect. Feedback can even be customized based on which wrong answer was selected. Canvas also allows multiple attempts on assessments, with various options for awarding credit (final attempt, best score, average score, etc.). Combining immediate feedback with multiple attempts is a power - yet underexplored - tool.

Learning Management Systems: A Tool For Postsecondary Cooperative Education Students, Jenny Peach-Squibb

Co-operative Education Publications and Scholarship

Expanding educational opportunities beyond the classroom and embedding them within a work term has created different challenges within academia. This paper will critically examine evidence and arguments for and against the hypotheses that learning management systems (LMSs) can increase a post-secondary Co-operative education (Co-op) student’s ability to connect academic theory to work place practice through ongoing reflection and feedback. Although many post-secondary institutions have access to LMS’s for academic classes, they tend to be underutilized as a tool to maximize Co-op work term learning and collaboration. Yet, it is important to recognize that online course discussions do not automatically generate …
