The shift to online courses during the global COVID-19 pandemic highlighted that teaching and learning online is an evolving practice for both students and educators. Notably, for international students, challenges with learning online can be more pronounced, as they are also adapting to cultures of their host country and expectations from their post-secondary institutions, while attempting to forge connections with their domestic peers. This paper describes several notable pedagogical interventions implemented by the author in her Canadian-based, online, asynchronous courses that have a high number of international students. Post-secondary faculty are experiencing a rise in instances of plagiarism in student assignments and are looking for resources to help with both the reduction and the detection of plagiarism. International students are particularly vulnerable due to confusing policies and lack of awareness of educational practices in North American institutions, with many institutions focusing on punitive measures to deter academic misconduct. Alternatively, we explored a method that considers international students’ role in maintaining their academic integrity and places emphasis on student learning, curricular modifications, and good citizenship. Building on an earlier action research project looking at international student grades at an Ontario College, the researchers explored the impact of learning in an online learning environment on international student performance. The researchers asked: 1) Is there a significant difference in the average student grades (regardless of country of residence or origin) between online delivery and in-person delivery? 2) Is there a statistically significant difference in average student grades between delivery methods, based on country of origin or residence?; and 3) Is there a statistically significant difference in average student grades between domestic and international students, based on delivery? …

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

In an effort to strengthen the academic and career preparedness of graduate students at their public land grant university, library faculty organized a one-day boot camp, featuring workshops focused on research and scholarly productivity skills. Organizers of the boot camp recognized that the needs of their graduate students extended beyond the discipline-specific curricula of graduate programs and the content of library orientations and one-shots. The workshop series they developed, informed by input from graduate students, focused on skills and strategies needed throughout the research lifecycle. Effective communication between ab initio flight students and their instructors is critical for efficient flight training; additionally, clear radio communications between student pilots and air traffic controllers is imperative for smooth and incident-free airport operations. During the Fall 2019 semester, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) at Daytona Beach implemented a new semi-intensive eight-week course to improve the communicative skills of its international students who speak English as a second language.

At Duquesne University, all first-year students take a 1-credit course called Research and Information Skills. This course familiarizes students with each of the topics in the ACRL framework and provides them with practice to promote their understanding of the topics as applied to the research process. Three years ago, our ESL program partnered with the library so that an ESL instructor would teach 1 or 2 sections populated by international students. International students encounter many issues when living and studying in the United States. It is essential to understand how these adult students make meaning of these experiences. The purpose of this study was to gain insights into the meaning of the lived experiences of international students living and studying in the U.S. six months after returning to their home country. Phenomenology was the research approach used to explore participants’ perspectives of their lived experiences. Findings show how the interactions between participants’ development and the multiple systems they lived through influenced their experiences and perspectives and contributed to their identity development. …
