Assessing The Effects Of The Holidays On Body Composition And Weight Change Using Air Displacement Plethysmography, Jessyka Nicholle Larson

This study was conducted to determine the change in weight and body composition over a 6-week holiday period. Change in body composition was measured using air displacement plethysmography technology (Bod Pod®). Thirteen men and 21 women ranging in age from 23-61 years were participants for this study. Baseline testing occurred the week of Thanksgiving Day (November 24 or 25), and the post-holiday assessment was the week after Utah State University's holiday break (January 5 or 6). Results from a nutrition and exercise questionnaire revealed a significant difference between pre-holiday and post-holiday consumption of vegetables (8.6 ± 8.3 vs. …

Jazz And Poetry Concert In Orono, Kay Hyatt

The annual Jazz and Poetry concert blends contemporary and classical jazz, and the reading of selected poems, including the featured reading of Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales." Presenters are Orono residents Jeffrey Wilhelm, reader, Peggy Jo Wilhelm, flautist, Laura Artesani, piano, and Jim Artesani, bass guitar, and Don Barry of Old Town, drums. This is the 14th year the Wilhelms have presented the Jazz and Poetry holiday celebration, a tradition they brought to Orono in 1995 after moving here from Wisconsin.

This materials development project consists of information and lesson plans related to eight patriotic holidays in the United States. It is intended to be used by English as a Second Language teachers in intermediate classes. Each unit consists of background information on a specific holiday, a lesson plan which included culture and grammar points, and follow-up activities. Each lesson includes three objectives: a sociolinguistic/cultural objective, a linguistic objective, and an interpersonal objective, which deals with the atmosphere in which the learning takes place. Similar interpersonal objectives are stated in each lesson and emphasize the importance of a supportive, no-threatening learning …
