Recent Federal Case Spotlights School’S Concussion Protocol, Charles J. Russo, Susan C. Davies

Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications

High school football players are nearly twice as likely to sustain a concussion as college players, according to a recent study by the Institute of Medicine and funded by the NFL. As such, it’s important for schools to have concussion protocols for student-athletes injured during play. A recent case, Mann v. Palmerton Area School District, 117 LRP 40825 (3d Cir. 09/21/17), highlights the importance of having school concussion management and prevention policies in place for student-athletes. After a football player in Pennsylvania demonstrated concussion-like symptoms following a hard hit during practice in November 2011, his coach took him out of …

Perceptions Of Texas High School Football Coaches Regarding Concussions, Justin J. Hefley

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

With new information regarding degenerative neurological problems, researchers linked Alzheimer’s disease with repeated head injuries such as a concussion. The new findings resulted in an outcry from the public, and the medical fraternity provided more information and safety for coaches and players. To this end, football regulations have been amended and player education, especially at the high school level, has increased. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore how medical data and media exposure on the subject of football-related concussions influence the perceptions and practices of Texas high school football coaches. The study was conducted at …

A Holistic Performance Assessment Of English Premier League Football Clubs 1992–2013, Daniel Plumley, Robert Wilson, Simon Shibli

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This paper devises and tests a statistical model (the PAM) to measure the financial and sporting performance of professional football clubs. For the majority of clubs, overall performance appears to vary over time in cycles. In addition to measuring holistic performance of professional football clubs in England, the …
