Correlation Between Body Weight And Eccentric Hamstring Strength In American Football Players, Ty K. Hacking, Malorie Wilwand, Aaron W. Johnson, B. Brett Mortensen
Correlation Between Body Weight And Eccentric Hamstring Strength In American Football Players, Ty K. Hacking, Malorie Wilwand, Aaron W. Johnson, B. Brett Mortensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Hamstring strength and explosiveness is imperative for collegiate American football players to perform at the highest level. Understanding the respective correlations, based on players positions, between eccentric hamstring strength (HS) and body weight (BW) among football players may help coaches and players to develop strength protocols required for specific positions. We hypothesize that increasing BW will result in increased eccentric HS. PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the relationship between football players BW and their max eccentric HS. METHODS: As a secondary analysis from the HAMIR study, 95 (age: 21.4 ± 2.00 yr; Ht: 187.7 ± 6.17 cm; …

Sprinting is a crucial component of success in American football regardless of the position group. PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between muscle volume (MV) of the lower body muscles and sprint performance among different AF position groups. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis from the HAMIR study. The study included NCAA Division I AF players aged 18 and older who were active on the roster and not injured at the time of data collection. Positions were grouped as follows: the combo group (linebackers and tight ends), the big group (offensive and defensive linemen), and the skill group (defensive …

Coaching America's Youngest College Football Team: My Plan, Trent Figg
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
“From the start, I’ve made it clear that being a champion isn’t just about football. The time a young man spends playing college football is some of the most formative in a young man’s life, and I refuse to let that time be wasted focusing solely on the game. I’m committed to shaping their character and preparing them to win on the field and in their future roles as husbands, fathers, leaders, and men of faith.”

Identifying Effective Leadership Styles Among Winning College Head Football Coaches: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Valin Kattoula
Identifying Effective Leadership Styles Among Winning College Head Football Coaches: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Valin Kattoula
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to discover and interpret the successful leadership styles of winning college head football coaches (HFC) in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The theory that guided this study is Bass’s (1995) transformational leadership theory. The central question asked, “What are the lived experiences of winning college HFCs leadership initiatives?” The study used a hermeneutic phenomenological design where HFCs participated in interviews and a focus group and submitted a writing prompt response to obtain the lived experiences about proven winning leadership styles. The study’s findings identified sixteen themes and five sub-themes. The sample …

The Relationship Between Shoulder Mobility And Upper Body Muscle Mass On 2-Rm Bench Press Performance, Raquel J. Cavazos, Francesca Aquilino, Ernesto Balderrama, Chaehyun Byun, Shelby Gerner, Cheyenne Martinez, Austin Riffe, Vipa Bernhardt, Michael D. Oldham
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
INTRODUCTION: Upper body strength is one of the most important factors in American football and thus tested frequently. However, strength may come at the cost of mobility as recent studies have reported an inverse relationship between shoulder range of motion (ROM) and strength, with an increase in strength causing a decrease in ROM (Shitara et al., 2022). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if upper body muscle mass or shoulder mobility are associated with two-repetition max (2-RM) bench press performance in collegiate football players. METHODS: Data from 80 Division I varsity football players (20.5 ± 1.4 …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Hamstring injuries are one of the most common injuries sustained in professional football with 800+ hamstring injuries per year. These hamstring injuries often occur between late swing (eccentric contraction) and early ground contact. PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation of eccentric hamstring strength to muscle volume across positional groups. METHODS: Athletes were divided into three homogeneous groups based on position (big (e.g., linemen), skill (e.g., receivers), combo (e.g., linebackers)). Seventy-three NCAA Division I football players participated (24 big, 37 skill, and 12 combo). Hamstring strength was collected for each leg while performing 3 Nordic curls on a Nordbord device. The peak …

Exploring The Cognitive, Environmental, And Behavioral Factors That Impact Concussion Reporting Behavior In Division Iii Football Players, Brandon T. Wright
All ETDs from UAB
Purpose: This dissertation applies Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to understand concussion reporting behavior in D-III football players and explores the culture of concussion reporting through qualitative ethnography. Using the SCT constructs, the study investigates the cognitive, environmental, and behavioral factors influencing concussion reporting in D-III football players. The lack of research on how reciprocal determinism affects concussion reporting at the most vulnerable level of competition provides an opportunity to examine the cultural context of concussion reporting. The goal is to develop theoretically-based interventions that increase concussion reporting and change cultural narratives concerning concussion reporting behavior in under-resourced institutions. Methods: This …
