Preschool Teachers’ Perspectives On Engaging Fathers In Their Child’S Education, Jawan Marquis Burwell
Preschool Teachers’ Perspectives On Engaging Fathers In Their Child’S Education, Jawan Marquis Burwell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Preschool environments set the educational foundation for children in the early years. Despite the positive effects that preschool environments have on children and families, previous studies have shown that preschool teachers are challenged to engage fathers in their child’s education. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate preschool teachers’ perspectives on engaging fathers in their child’s education. The conceptual framework was based upon Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The research question focused on the challenges that teachers encounter in engaging fathers in their child’s education. This qualitative study included individual one-on-one interviews with 12 teachers using an open-ended …

Identifying As Husbands, Fathers, And School Leaders: A Phenomenology Of Doctoral Persistence Among Limited Residency Students, John Patterson
Identifying As Husbands, Fathers, And School Leaders: A Phenomenology Of Doctoral Persistence Among Limited Residency Students, John Patterson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This transcendental phenomenological study investigated doctoral persistence for males (N = 13) who completed their limited residency doctoral program (LRDP) while managing their family roles as fathers and husbands, and while performing their work role as a K-12 lead school administrator. Participants were selected via snowball sampling from private universities that offered a LRDP in the United States. The theories guiding this study were Tinto’s (1975, 1993, 2006) student integration theory (SIT) and Hobfoll’s (1989) conservation of resource model (COR). Tinto’s (1975, 1993, 2006) SIT explained the academic and social interaction between the individual and the institution, while Hobfoll’s (1989) …
Raising A Child With A Severe Disability: The Impact On Parents And Siblings, Kathleen A. Packingham
Raising A Child With A Severe Disability: The Impact On Parents And Siblings, Kathleen A. Packingham
Culminating Projects in Special Education
A review of 10 recent studies that reported on the effects of raising a child with a severe disability. The paper examines the effects of stress on parents raising a child with a severe disability, as well as outcomes for siblings being raised in the same households. Mothers reported higher daily parenting hassles and stress than did fathers. Maladaptive behaviors were the biggest contributing factor to increased stress in the family. Positive coping strategies and increased service utilization lead to decrease in stress and increase in positive outcomes.
Father Convict Cichlids Bite Intruders More Often In Hot Temperatures, Jesse L. Heckendorf
Father Convict Cichlids Bite Intruders More Often In Hot Temperatures, Jesse L. Heckendorf
STAR Program Research Presentations
Convict cichlids (Archocentrus nigrofasciatus) have evolved to be extremely good parents by protecting their brood. Parental care leads to aggressive biting, chasing, and gill flaring to intimidate predators. In this experiment, we show that environmental factors, such as the changing of temperature in this case, affect a male convict cichlid’s aggression toward caring for his offspring when an intruder is introduced. Male convict cichlids attack more in warmer water.

G90-985 Discipline -- An Effective Life Guide, Herbert G. Lingren
G90-985 Discipline -- An Effective Life Guide, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
There is no doubt that discipline is needed in families. Society could not exist if people acted without concern for others. Why, then, is there so much disagreement about this subject?
Parents often misunderstand and confuse the terms discipline and punishment. They see them as being the same thing but they are not. The dictionary defines discipline as "a system of rules governing conduct." It is "training that corrects, molds, or perfects." In contrast, punishment is defined as "retributive suffering, pain, loss, or penalty." The term discipline has its origin in the word "disciple" -- a follower who learns from …
G89-929 Consequences Teach Responsibility, Herbert G. Lingren
G89-929 Consequences Teach Responsibility, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes how to discipline children by letting them experience the consequences of their behavior, and by using "time-outs" and "reverse time-outs."
There are many ways to discipline children. Parents can choose ways that suit them as individuals and that fit their beliefs and values. Letting children suffer the consequences for their behavior is just one of many discipline methods.
Letting children suffer the consequences is a "hassle-free" way to discipline them. Children learn from experiences, just like adults. We call it "learning the hard way." The child learns that every act has a consequence. And, they learn to …
Comparison Of Attitudes Of Mothers And Fathers Toward Nursery School Education, Pamela Meals
Comparison Of Attitudes Of Mothers And Fathers Toward Nursery School Education, Pamela Meals
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Attitudes of middle class mothers and fathers toward nursery school education were measured and compared. The subjects were parents of children who attended the Utah State University nursery school. A scale was developed to test parental attitudes. Attitudes toward nursery school education were definitely favorable. Comparison of attitudes expressed by mothers with those expressed by fathers revealed significant differences between the two groups, when the total number of responses of all scale items were considered together.
The total scale included 48 items comprising three subscales, which tested the following parental attitudes toward nursery school education: attitudes concerning a child's independence …
The Father Role As Seen By A Group Of College Student Fathers, Devona Alice Dean Luke
The Father Role As Seen By A Group Of College Student Fathers, Devona Alice Dean Luke
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Some literature implies the modern father has abdicated his place as head of the family, but little research has been done to examine the role of the father in the modern American family.
Intensive interviews of 18 college student men who each had at least two children showed that these men are very much concerned with fatherhood and participate actively in the rearing of their children. They feel the father has at least as much responsibility for the rearing of their children as the mother, possibly more. They are involved more in some dimensions of parenthood than others. Those fathers …
