Emerging From The Deep: Complexity, Emergent Pedagogy And Deep Learning, Sue L. T. Mcgregor Dec 2020

Emerging From The Deep: Complexity, Emergent Pedagogy And Deep Learning, Sue L. T. Mcgregor

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

As indicated in the title – emerging from the deep – this paper proposes that an ability to face and deal with complexity can emerge from deep learning that is facilitated by pedagogies designed to ensure this outcome, especially an emergent pedagogy that instills deep education. Educators would view the classroom as a complex adaptive system (CAS) capable of self-organizing and operating at the edge of chaos where order emerges, just not predictably. Self-directed students would experience a learning environment that is appreciative of nonequilibrium, unpredictability, shifting and emerging patterns and co-evolution. Teachers would be coaches, activators and facilitators. Students …

Deep Learning Of Facial Embeddings And Facial Landmark Points For The Detection Of Academic Emotions, Hua Leong Fwa Jul 2020

Deep Learning Of Facial Embeddings And Facial Landmark Points For The Detection Of Academic Emotions, Hua Leong Fwa

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic emotion recognition is an actively researched area as emotion plays a pivotal role in effective human communications. Equipping a computer to understand and respond to human emotions has potential applications in many fields including education, medicine, transport and hospitality. In a classroom or online learning context, the basic emotions do not occur frequently and do not influence the learning process itself. The academic emotions such as engagement, frustration, confusion and boredom are the ones which are pivotal to sustaining the motivation of learners. In this study, we evaluated the use of deep learning on FaceNet embeddings and facial landmark …

Measuring The Additive Effects Of Multimedia Social Cue Principles On Learners’ Cognitive Load, Emotions, Attitude, And Learning Outcomes, Smruti J. Shah Apr 2020

Measuring The Additive Effects Of Multimedia Social Cue Principles On Learners’ Cognitive Load, Emotions, Attitude, And Learning Outcomes, Smruti J. Shah

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Multimedia principles are developed and employed to design effective multimedia instructions that foster learning. Specifically, multimedia principles such as personalization, voice, and embodiment principles are developed based on social cues to promote deep learning. Most researchers in the past have investigated the individual effects of these principles on learning. The goal of the present study was to investigate the additive effects of these abovementioned principles on learners’ perceived cognitive load, emotions, attitude, and learning outcomes (i.e. retention and transfer of knowledge). Sixty college students participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete two short instructional modules and a short …

Predictive Accuracy Of Recommender Algorithms, William Blake Noffsinger Jan 2020

Predictive Accuracy Of Recommender Algorithms, William Blake Noffsinger

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Recommender systems present a customized list of items based upon user or item characteristics with the objective of reducing a large number of possible choices to a smaller ranked set most likely to appeal to the user. A variety of algorithms for recommender systems have been developed and refined including applications of deep learning neural networks. Recent research reports point to a need to perform carefully controlled experiments to gain insights about the relative accuracy of different recommender algorithms, because studies evaluating different methods have not used a common set of benchmark data sets, baseline models, and evaluation metrics. The …
