The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
Student engagement within District X is at an all-time low. As District X strives for more equitable learning opportunities, they also work to serve the unique and varying needs of students despite the rising physical and mental health concerns, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that shook students and adults alike, resulting in a global collective trauma and led to the shutdown of schools worldwide in March 2020. These issues are especially prevalent within our most underfunded and underserved populations, such as Indigenous populations. As Canadians, Indigenous relations and calls to adopt Indigenous ways of knowing and being …
Observing Enables Deeper Learning For Disaffected Learners, Fiona J. Mcdonnell, Eric Crivac
Observing Enables Deeper Learning For Disaffected Learners, Fiona J. Mcdonnell, Eric Crivac
Middle Grades Review
Post-Covid, upon returning to the classroom, many students, but most especially those from among our more vulnerable populations, have difficulty collaborating and communicating with each other and reconnecting with their learning. We describe how a learning exploration that positioned struggling rising sixth-graders as cricket explorers, who would become cricket experts by observing the habits and behaviors of crickets in their care, nurtured their capacities for collaboration and communication and created a community of deeper learning, for both the students and teacher. That all students have opportunities for deeper learning is a matter of social justice. The exploration took place as …
Computer Vision Aided Hotspot Creation In Virtual Environments, Lama A. Affara, Bilal E. Nakhal
Computer Vision Aided Hotspot Creation In Virtual Environments, Lama A. Affara, Bilal E. Nakhal
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Hotspot creation is one of the most important modules within virtual environments which helps show the navigators of these environments some information about semantic elements within it and facilitate the navigation between the virtual spaces. In this paper, a system for automatic hotspot proposals and creation in virtual environments is proposed. The system uses computer vision modules to automatically propose hotspot locations in addition to identifying and creating these hotspots with candidate labels. Two main modules used in the system are object detection and scene segmentation. The scene segmentation helps give candidate hotspot areas and provides an overall understanding of …

Using Deep Learning To Generate Front And Backyards In Landscape Architecture, Mehmet O. Senem, Mustafa Koç, Hayriye E. Tunçay, İmdat As
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) engines in the design disciplines is a nascent field of research, which became very popular over the last decade. In particular, deep learning (DL) and related generative adversarial networks (GANs) proved to be very promising. While there are many research projects exploring AI in architecture and urban planning, e.g., in order to generate optimal floor layouts, massing models, evaluate image quality, etc., there are not many research projects in the area of landscape architecture - in particular the design of two-dimensional garden layouts. In this paper, we present our work using GANs to generate …
Reform Challenges In School Education, Geoff N. Masters
Reform Challenges In School Education, Geoff N. Masters
School and system improvement
The central thesis of this paper has been that the challenges now confronting schools globally will require fundamental reforms of the external frameworks within which schools work. Today’s challenges to better prepare young people for the future and to ensure that every student learns successfully will not be met by simply expecting teachers to change what they do or by making minor adjustments to current curricula, assessment, examination, reporting and credentialling arrangements. Today’s challenges require deep reforms and a willingness to reimagine—in other words, to ‘transform’ existing learning systems. This is essential because the external frameworks within which teachers and …

Joint Angle Calculations Using Motion Capture And Deep Learning Pose Estimation While Running, Luke Vankeersbilck, Isaac Hedengren, Mcgyver Clark, Iain Hunter
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Marker based motion capture is currently the most accurate method of measuring human kinematics; however, it is expensive and is often limited to lab environments making it unsuitable for many applications. Two-dimensional methods are available through open source code, but it is unclear which of these methods provides the greatest accuracy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to quantify the accuracy of pose estimation from a monocular electro-optical sensor with deep learning to infer segment end points and pose estimation utilizing two open-source code approaches. METHODS: One subject ran at 6.5 m/s for 15 s while being …

How Education Gets In The Way Of Learning, Geoff N. Masters
How Education Gets In The Way Of Learning, Geoff N. Masters
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
The formal structures and processes of school education – including the organisation of the school curriculum, processes for assessing student learning, methods of reporting performance, and the uses to which student results are put – are often inconsistent with what is now known about the best ways to promote human learning. Rather than being designed to maximise every student’s learning, these structures and processes often reflect 20th century priorities, including the use of school education to sort and select students into different education and training destinations, and future careers. This sorting function of schooling is becoming increasingly irrelevant in knowledge …
Quality Assessment Of Composite Manufacturing Using Automated Visual Inspection System With Sem Images, Md Fashiar Rahman
Quality Assessment Of Composite Manufacturing Using Automated Visual Inspection System With Sem Images, Md Fashiar Rahman
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The morphology of fibers (e.g., spatial uniformity, orientation, and length) plays a decisive role in determining the material properties or fabrication quality of fiber-reinforced nanocomposites. Hence, determining the morphology becomes a very critical issue in the field of nanocomposite quality control. The conventional way of quality inspection is to take the scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the cross-section of composite material and do the visual checking of these SEM images to evaluate the nanofiber alignment and length distribution. But this type of inspection is often subjective, inaccurate and time consuming. Moreover, the extremely small size of nanofibers makes the …

Somewhere I'Ve Never Been-Part Iii, John Lanci
Somewhere I'Ve Never Been-Part Iii, John Lanci
JRCA Pedagogy
In this essay, I propose that we examine the implications of a shift of fundamental importance, a shift in the way we see ourselves in the classroom and the difficult changes we need to make in the power relationships traditionally at play in our work.4 What follows is not an analysis of power relationships in general, but thoughts about how power flows in the classroom, and how we might modify that flow to encourage more effective teaching and learning. My point: If we empower students to become not passive listeners but active collaborators, they will be more likely to invest …
Emerging From The Deep: Complexity, Emergent Pedagogy And Deep Learning, Sue L. T. Mcgregor
Emerging From The Deep: Complexity, Emergent Pedagogy And Deep Learning, Sue L. T. Mcgregor
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
As indicated in the title – emerging from the deep – this paper proposes that an ability to face and deal with complexity can emerge from deep learning that is facilitated by pedagogies designed to ensure this outcome, especially an emergent pedagogy that instills deep education. Educators would view the classroom as a complex adaptive system (CAS) capable of self-organizing and operating at the edge of chaos where order emerges, just not predictably. Self-directed students would experience a learning environment that is appreciative of nonequilibrium, unpredictability, shifting and emerging patterns and co-evolution. Teachers would be coaches, activators and facilitators. Students …

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)
Being able to leverage an organization’s processes and core competencies to sustain its competitive advantage is important (Ray, Barney, & Muhanna, 2004). One learning objective of an on-line MBA is to teach students how to apply the VRIO (value, rarity, imitate, and operationalize) model, developed by Barney and Hesterly (2006), in order to identify an optimum strategy. However students in the program have had difficulty in understanding this model, partially because of the traditional pedagogy used in online teaching. This case study demonstrates how reusable learning objects (RLO) can facilitate knowledge in an online learningenvironment. The RLO developed and …
