Reform Challenges In School Education, Geoff N. Masters Jan 2023

Reform Challenges In School Education, Geoff N. Masters

School and system improvement

The central thesis of this paper has been that the challenges now confronting schools globally will require fundamental reforms of the external frameworks within which schools work. Today’s challenges to better prepare young people for the future and to ensure that every student learns successfully will not be met by simply expecting teachers to change what they do or by making minor adjustments to current curricula, assessment, examination, reporting and credentialling arrangements. Today’s challenges require deep reforms and a willingness to reimagine—in other words, to ‘transform’ existing learning systems. This is essential because the external frameworks within which teachers and …

Somewhere I'Ve Never Been-Part Iii, John Lanci Jan 2021

Somewhere I'Ve Never Been-Part Iii, John Lanci

JRCA Pedagogy

In this essay, I propose that we examine the implications of a shift of fundamental importance, a shift in the way we see ourselves in the classroom and the difficult changes we need to make in the power relationships traditionally at play in our work.4 What follows is not an analysis of power relationships in general, but thoughts about how power flows in the classroom, and how we might modify that flow to encourage more effective teaching and learning. My point: If we empower students to become not passive listeners but active collaborators, they will be more likely to invest …

Deep Learning Of Facial Embeddings And Facial Landmark Points For The Detection Of Academic Emotions, Hua Leong Fwa Jul 2020

Deep Learning Of Facial Embeddings And Facial Landmark Points For The Detection Of Academic Emotions, Hua Leong Fwa

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic emotion recognition is an actively researched area as emotion plays a pivotal role in effective human communications. Equipping a computer to understand and respond to human emotions has potential applications in many fields including education, medicine, transport and hospitality. In a classroom or online learning context, the basic emotions do not occur frequently and do not influence the learning process itself. The academic emotions such as engagement, frustration, confusion and boredom are the ones which are pivotal to sustaining the motivation of learners. In this study, we evaluated the use of deep learning on FaceNet embeddings and facial landmark …

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) are designed for providing personalized instructions to students with the needs of their skills. Assessment of student knowledge acquisition dynamically is nontrivial during her learning process with ITS. Knowledge tracing, a popular student modeling technique for student knowledge assessment in adaptive tutoring, which is used for tracing student's knowledge state and detecting student's knowledge acquisition by using decomposed individual skill or problems with a single skill per problem. Unfortunately, recent KT models fail to deal with practices of complex skill composition and variety of concepts included in a problem simultaneously. Our goal is to investigate a …

Changing The Traditional Lecture Format To Foster A Deep Approach To Learning Among A Group Of Students., Eric Bates Jan 2010

Changing The Traditional Lecture Format To Foster A Deep Approach To Learning Among A Group Of Students., Eric Bates

Conference papers

Providing feedback on revision papers provided to a group of Phase 6 apprentice painters and decorators brought concerns regarding the approach to learning of this group of advanced apprentices. Correcting these papers indicated a large degree of confusion and incorrect answers on the paper. It appeared that the gilding module was not being understood at a conceptual level. Recitation of facts was not a problem but the linking together of different aspects of gilding was not happening. Specifically, the concern was that the students were engaging in a surface approach to learning which could be detrimental and that I may …
