Abstract Purpose The purpose of this pilot study is to develop relevant questions for research by gaining an initial understanding of how the field of Study Abroad education is organizing itself within institution of higher education. The context is the growing numbers of students, demands and expectations made on Study Abroad programs. Approach and Methodology The survey was carried out by analyzing publicly available data and information, as it would be available to students, of all the accredited institutions of higher education within the six States of New England. Civic and citizenship education is increasingly conceptualized in national curricula within a lifelong learning perspective that encompasses formal curricula (that specify content and approaches in a subject or set of subjects), non-formal curricula (through co-curricular activities in schools) and informal curricula (through a school and classroom ethos that embodies citizenship values). One review of education policies in Europe documents attempts to encourage ‘active citizenship’ supported by ‘democratic schools’ offering a ‘participatory school culture’. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine if one's level of affluenza could be reduced through education and awareness. In particular, this study measured whether or not exposure to the benefits of community involvement, and the harm of overconsumption could alter the intentions that college students have regarding their behavior, as it pertains to materialism, consumption, and civic responsibility. The data were collected from college students in the form of pre-tests and post-tests utilizing an affluenza scale created for this research.
