Editorial: Arts Integration Allows Students The Opportunity To Be Original, Ksenia S. Zhbanova, Audrey C. Rule
Editorial: Arts Integration Allows Students The Opportunity To Be Original, Ksenia S. Zhbanova, Audrey C. Rule
Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions
This editorial explores the other six articles in this issue 2 of volume 3 of the Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions to examine how originality is displayed and supported by art projects. Originality, is a quality or a characteristic of an idea, approach or product. Originality can be defined as newness or novelty. To be classified as original, an idea must be new. It does not have to have a utilitarian value, which is a requirement for an idea to be categorized as creative. Helping students develop originality is important because it allows the freedom to make any …

Discourses Of Creativity In Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum, Beatrix Bocazar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The concept of creativity is ubiquitous in educational reports, policies, and curricula in the minority world. Many of these texts consider creativity an economic imperative and a key element of change for every knowledge domain of the 21st century. This study is anchored in a Critical Discourse Analysis theoretical framework and represents an inquiry of creativity in kindergarten curricula. The aims of this inquiry were to identify creativity common sense beliefs and theories and to examine which ones have been employed in which curricula, and with what implications for children, teachers, educators, and society. I designed a qualitative case …

Self-Generated Notations: A Suggested Methodology Of Introducing Movement Literacy, Shlomit Ofer
Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)
The purpose of this paper is to present a method aimed at enabling the acquisition of movement literacy in a communicative-creative manner that does not require long-term expertise. The paper opens with a brief history and description of Eshkol Wachman Movement Notation (EWMN), followed by a discussion of the notion of Movement Literacy and its defined components–conceptualization, representation and kinesthetic performance, as have emerged within the EWMN system. Two additional educational ideas are also mentioned–the constructionism and the independent development of visual representations by learners. Together, these ideas establish a theoretical background for a non-formal study, in which dance-teaching students …
Defining Contagion : Examining Imagination As A Source Of The Infection In Print Studios, Joshua Tangen
Defining Contagion : Examining Imagination As A Source Of The Infection In Print Studios, Joshua Tangen
Masters Theses
In this thesis, I attempted to define a contagious component of art education within a community print shop. In this quest, I examine theories around imagination, creativity, and psychology through an analysis of the work of Maxine Greene, Kieran Egan, Ken Robinson, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Gathered from a variety of sources that include, books, scholarly articles, and online video, I link Greene’s concepts of what role imagination plays in critical thinking and empathy, Egan’s promotion of imagination’s ability to create personal and emotional engagement, Robinson’s ideas about creativity in learning, and Csikszentmihayli’s theory of flow. Connecting these four philosophers are …

Designing A Social Architecture For Personal Leadership In The 21st Century: The Autonomous Realization Tetrad (Art), Bobby Ricketts
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Rather than summarizing the extent of my learning as a graduate student in the University of Massachusetts Boston Critical and Creative Thinking Master of Arts Program, this work instead illustrates a starting point for how I intend to apply my learning moving forward. Various characteristics in the writing do, however, reflect influences from all CCT courses taken. Primarily using personal narrative, I discuss various personal and professional experiences which have inspired self-developed creative methodologies. The methodologies, and learning derived from using them, are folded into an inquiry regarding Futures Studies, Systems Thinking, Design Thinking, Mastery, and Flow. Inspired by these …

This project examined the ways in which dialogical processing of the fact of one’s own impending death impacts meaning-making in day-to-day life. Taking a qualitative approach, the thesis builds from five in-depth interviews and follow-up surveys with students in higher education. In reviewing the role of death education in public school settings, the study concludes that an enhanced emphasis on love of learning, creative thinking and community engagement in public education is the most effective way for educators to support students in building appropriate skillsets to create meaning in their lives, as well as in the face of their eventual …
Unlocking Creative Potential: Catholic Elementary School Principal Perceptions Of Creativity, Kellie Scherer
Unlocking Creative Potential: Catholic Elementary School Principal Perceptions Of Creativity, Kellie Scherer
Doctoral Dissertations
Church documents and scholars affirm that traditional pedagogies are ineffective in preparing students for the demands of the 21st century (CCE, 2014, p. 13, Darling-Hammond, 2010; Hartley, 2003; Kampylis, 2010; Skiba, Tan, Sternberg & Grigorenko, 2010). A review of the literature revealed that a gap in research on the Catholic elementary school principal’s understanding of and commitment to creativity exists. Even teachers who value creativity cannot fully support its development in the classroom without proper training. Continuing education coordinated by principals is one of the few opportunities for teachers to identify and confront their creativity misconceptions. The purpose of this …

The Internationalization Of Creativity As A Learning Competence, Tavis D. Jules, Kelly Cebold Sundberg
The Internationalization Of Creativity As A Learning Competence, Tavis D. Jules, Kelly Cebold Sundberg
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
This study uses a quantitative content analysis of learning competences – as described and prescribed in 21st century frameworks – and those competences evaluated by international assessments to explore the nexus between recommendation and reality. In drawing insights from the theoretical underpinnings of human capital theory we argue, with respect to creativity, that (i) there is a degree of alignment in the prescription and assessment of creativity as a learning competence and (ii) there is a divergence in the way the competence is discussed, which may account for the lack of acknowledgement as a key skill in preparing students …

Mucp 183-983: Applied Music Composition--A Course Benchmark Portfolio, Gregory Simon
Mucp 183-983: Applied Music Composition--A Course Benchmark Portfolio, Gregory Simon
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
MUCP 183-983, Applied Music Composition, is the core of the music composition course curriculum for students at all levels, from freshman to doctoral candidate. Like all applied lesson environments, it is a one-on-one, individualized study that principally involves the instructor giving students feedback on their musical works-in-progress. This time-honored paradigm for teaching composition has produced brilliant artists, but is rife with pitfalls and traps that can tarnish a student’s growth: composition pedagogues can coerce students into writing music like their teachers, or can prescribe a curriculum that makes composition accessible only to students who have already played classical music for …

Designers, Emotions, And Ideas: How Graphic Designers Understand Their Emotional Experiences Around Ideation, Alisa Hutchinson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Research on the role of designers’ own emotions as an influence on design processes, outcomes, and professional identity is limited but indicates that these experiences may play a meaningful role in design, particularly around ideation processes. This phenomenographic study sought to investigate and identify critical variations in the ways that graphic designers understand their emotional experiences around ideation. Based on interviews with 15 graphic designers, seven distinct categories of understanding emerged. These included (1) goodness-of-fit between designer and project sets an emotional tone for ideation; (2) high arousal emotions are present during ideation but incidental; (3) high arousal emotions are …

Underachievement Of Creatively Gifted High School Students, Jennie M. Mizrahi
Teaching and Learning Sciences: Doctoral Research Projects
Underachievement is a pervasive problem for gifted students, and creatively gifted students may be at greater risk for underachievement due to personality traits, lack of challenge in strength areas, a mismatch between school environment and student needs, low status associated with creative achievements and behaviors in the school system, and other factors. This study focused on six creatively gifted, underachieving high school students from an urban-cluster area in the western United States. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to gather data in the form of interviews with underachieving, creatively gifted students, their parents, and teachers; observation of classrooms; and creative …

Embracing The Bounty: Countering The Curriculum Of Deficit, Diana Bishop
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Embracing the Bounty: Countering the Curriculum of Deficit (2018) addresses the restrictive nature of neoliberalism and offers alternative perspectives and possibilities for change by countering the curriculum of deficit now prevalent in the United States – a curriculum reflective of neoliberalism’s invasion of public schools and the rationality that reduces students, teachers, and schools to statistics emphasizing economic value above all else. In this dissertation, the impact of neoliberalism on public schools and its destructive effects are discussed as are alternative philosophical frameworks. Through a series of essays, I explore how a curriculum of deficit infiltrated American public schools and …
