Helping Students Reduce Test Anxiety For Success On Standardized Tests, Nicholas Iveson

Culminating Experience Projects

Research has revealed important information about test anxiety and the strategies that students can use to cope during an exam. School counselors can foster these coping strategies within students through classroom lessons. This project explores the history of high stakes testing and how this has led to students experiencing test anxiety as well as offers high school counselors a four-week lesson plan that will help ninth grade students in their first semester learn coping strategies. Strategies include mindfulness, test preparation and test taking strategies, and positive self-talk. These lessons are to be taught in classrooms as a tier 1 intervention.

There has been a growing concern about the number of students exhibiting anxiety in schools. Research shows that implementing interventions can help reduce the amount anxiety in students. School counselors can implement small group lessons with a focus on a theoretical approach using cognitive behavioral therapy to help address this concern. Background: The purpose of this study was to present possibilities of using computer tests in the assessment of chosen cognitive skills and an analysis of correlations between the mentioned variables and the level of optimism, self-efficacy, coping strategies, anxiety and perceived stress in Polish national team rowers. The aim of the study was to assess the perception of pain (threshold and tolerance to pain of the combat athletes in comparison to those not practicing any sport and checking whether there is a correlation between the pain perception and strategies for coping with stress in both studied groups. The study was conducted on 273 healthy men. The test group consisted of 203 athletes; the control group consisted of 70 students from the Faculty of Physical Culture, University of Szczecin. Background: ‪The subject matter of the submitted survey was to determine what coping strategies are used to manage stress by university students in the field of education. Material and methods: ‪The research group included 51 university students of the Faculty of Education in a combined type of study (the students teach at high schools concurrently with their studies). To collect data, the standardised Stress Coping Style Questionnaire, SVF-78 was used. Results: ‪There is a statistically significant difference between the variables. The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has had unprecedented effects on education. The sudden shift to online classes along with strict physical distancing measures in the pedagogical settings require educators to reconsider all aspects involved in teaching and learning. Teachers as important stakeholders must grapple with the challenges caused by the abrupt transition to remote teaching and learning.
