This action research study explored the practice of close reading for reading comprehension in a classroom of fourth grade students for a duration of six weeks. This study was driven by the problem of practice identified by the researcher’s own observations and a look into the data of her own students. The purpose of this research was to provide students with reading comprehension tools to help them take charge of their own reading experiences and apply strategies that help guide them into a better understanding of the text. Through Augustana College's partnership with Longfellow Elementary School, I had the opportunity to engage in research regarding remedial reading strategies with second grade students. I investigated the effectiveness of close reading in the elementary school classroom. From my research, it was evident that close reading boosted comprehension as well as minimized the amount of visual errors that students made.

Close Reading Strategies Applied By English Language Learners When Reading Challenging Content Area Texts, Laura Barry

The study introduced high school English Language Learners to close reading strategies to use when reading difficult content area texts, with a particular focus on discussion, prior knowledge, vocabulary, and self-generating questions. The students participated in multiple measures to see if they developed metacognitive awareness in employing the strategies. Findings revealed that the students adapted quickly to using the strategies with teacher support, and that they began to internalize them. Implications for teacher research are discussed.

From Augustana College's partnership with Longfellow Elementary School, I was able to examine strategies that work with struggling readers. More specifically, I was able to use the close reading strategy when working with a small group of students to read grade level texts. From this intervention, the students were able to enhance both their comprehension and their accuracy when reading.

The purpose of this ex-post facto, causal-comparative study is to determine the effects of close reading on student achievement. Close reading is a strategy developed through literary criticism and the influences of I. A. Richards and the New Critics. This study analyzes close reading to determine the most efficient practice to help students develop critical reading, thinking, and written communication skills. The researcher examined 2013 to 2015 New York State English Language Arts Exam data from 10 school districts located in the Broome-Tioga BOCES Region.
