Role Playing Gamification In The Science Classroom, Timothy Normandt
Role Playing Gamification In The Science Classroom, Timothy Normandt
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Invented in 1972, Dungeons & Dragons was a brand new way to play games—utilizing the strongest computer humans have ever conceived: the human brain. This project strives to categorize some of the techniques used in the classroom as role playing in their own right. The purpose of all gamification, role playing and SEL, and the satanic panic that came out against Dungeons & Dragons are looked at. This paper additionally looks at some examples of role playing in the classroom that have succeeded at a small charter school in Minneapolis. These findings underscore the equity achieved by allowing for student …

Utilizing Classical Literature In Kindergarten Classrooms: A Tool For Developing Social Emotional Skills And Reading Comprehension, Madeline Steinhoff
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project seeks to answer the question, How can educators use pedagogical storytelling with classical literature to address the social-emotional needs of their students while also increasing reading comprehension in early years? For the purposes of this research, classical literature is defined mainly as fables, folk stories and fairy tales. In answering my research question, I explore the research that underpins the history of pedagogical storytelling, classical literature, best practices in reading comprehension and academic language instruction, and the foundations of social emotional learning. This Capstone Project includes a two week, ten lesson literature unit that weaves together these …

The participants are diverse in terms of age (26 to 54), race (three white, six African American), gender (two male and six female) and educational experience (2–25 years teaching). Education for Black children in the United States recounts histories of exclusion and segregation. Montessori education for children in the U.S. over the past 100 years shows a progression …
The Role Of Peer Relationships In Developing, Promoting, And Maintaining Teachers’ Social And Emotional Competence In The Charter School Setting, Ted Jason Weisman
The Role Of Peer Relationships In Developing, Promoting, And Maintaining Teachers’ Social And Emotional Competence In The Charter School Setting, Ted Jason Weisman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Social and Emotional Competence (SEC) is comprised of five main components: self awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Within the context of K-12 education, SEC is typically explored through the lens of student achievement or student progress. This area of research is noteworthy as teachers aretrained in SEL to assist and support students, not themselves or one another (Wiglesworth et al., 2016). Although teachers may receive training on SEC, the teachers rarely are the focus of that training (Aldrup et al., 2021). One area of particular interest is the setting of charter schools and how they address …

Parent And Administrator Perspectives Regarding Transportation Availability And Student Enrollment At Charter Schools, Amy Summers
Parent And Administrator Perspectives Regarding Transportation Availability And Student Enrollment At Charter Schools, Amy Summers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The demand for charter schools has increased during last two decades. Scholarly literature lacked deeper understanding of the perspectives of administrators and parents on transportation availability with respect to equal access to charter schools and how transportation is perceived to affect parental capability or willingness to enroll children in charter schools. This basic qualitative study, with the theory of school choice as the framework, used interviews with 8 parents of students enrolled in charter schools and traditional public schools and 4 administrators of charter schools. Two research questions focused on administrator and parent perspectives about transportation availability with respect to …
Exploration Of Principals’ Leadership Qualities And Their Associations With A School Learning Environment And School Outcomes, Gultekin John Aytekin
Exploration Of Principals’ Leadership Qualities And Their Associations With A School Learning Environment And School Outcomes, Gultekin John Aytekin
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Charter schools have carved a niche in public education, but despite an increased number of studies in charter schools in recent years, the research in charter school leadership is not adequate. School Leadership is critical for school success; it is the second most significant factor for influencing student academic achievement after classroom teaching and curricula (Robinson et al., 2008; Day et al., 2008, Leithwood, 2006; Marzano, 2001).The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the Illinois charter school principals' characteristics and leadership qualities (leadership style, leadership outcome, and cultural intelligence) and their relationships with the school learning environment as …
The Impact Of Racial Segregation On School Performance In Charter Schools, Billie Wright Berry
The Impact Of Racial Segregation On School Performance In Charter Schools, Billie Wright Berry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Now in existence for over two decades, charter schools have become a divisive issue in American public education. Advocates contend that charters provide students and parents greater control of their education and promote innovation. School choice critics indicate that charter schools serve as a means for racial re-segregation and have led to an increase in racially homogeneous public schools. This quantitative study seeks to determine differences among the racial composition of charter schools and the racial composition of traditional public school systems in the same community to determine if charters have served as a means of “White flight” for students …

Education In The Settler Colony: Displacement, Inequality, And Disappearance Via Charter Schools, David R. Fisher
Education In The Settler Colony: Displacement, Inequality, And Disappearance Via Charter Schools, David R. Fisher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The encroachment of market-based practices on public education has resulted in the creation of vouchers, charter schools, virtual schools, home schools, and other forms of educational choice. While there has always been choice in education in the United States for the wealthy and White, the current conception of school choice, in theory, allows equal access to education for all. Undergirding the neoliberal practice of school choice is a connection to a troubling past of capitalist oppression and settler colonialism. Like settler colonialism, the practice of school choice has resulted in the displacement of educators, families, and students, inequality between different …
Student Affective And Cognitive Environments In A Classical School, Ryan Meaney
Student Affective And Cognitive Environments In A Classical School, Ryan Meaney
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This capstone thesis used a qualitative research approach to answer the question of how middle school students in a classical education setting described their affective and cognitive environments. Students in a classical school have different standards and expectations, as the school approach and philosophy are somewhat different than other public schools. The purpose of this thesis question was to see how students felt both emotionally and academically about being in this classical environment. The literature review that accompanied this thesis touched on each aspect of the question individually. Studies on student affective and cognitive environments displayed the role that student …

School Choice Competition And How District Leaders Respond To Resulting Fiscal Impacts, Terrie S. Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examined how superintendents of public-school districts respond to the financial impact of school choice competition. Many U. S. school districts are experiencing funding losses due to the enrollment of students in charter schools and private school voucher programs. The state per-pupil funds follow the student. District leaders must respond to this loss of funding and still maintain high quality instruction and services. The purpose of this research was to explore how leaders develop strategic plans to deal with the fiscal impact of school choice competition. Complexity Leadership Theory was used to view how school district leaders perceive competition, …
Teacher Leaders’ Perceptions Of Charter School Principals’ Instructional Leadership Practices, Frednardo Davis, Mary K. Boudreaux
Teacher Leaders’ Perceptions Of Charter School Principals’ Instructional Leadership Practices, Frednardo Davis, Mary K. Boudreaux
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Teacher leaders are a population to consider when observing instructional leadership or the instructional leadership behaviors of the school principal. While teacher leaders may formally or informally fulfill different roles in the school, depending on the school’s needs and the principal’s vision. A voice rarely illuminated within research, teacher leaders should have the ability to perceive and speak to the instructional leadership behaviors of the school principal. It is through the display of the instructional leadership behaviors and implementation of processes and programs that teacher leaders are able to more accurately perceive and communicate beliefs about their school principals’ practices …

Charter Schools And Special Education Enrollment Rates, Mary Ann Lind
Charter Schools And Special Education Enrollment Rates, Mary Ann Lind
Dissertations
There is a growing concern that public charter schools, as publicly funded entities, which are mandated to ensure FAPE and IDEA, are lagging significantly behind public non-charter schools, when it comes to special education student enrollment. This potentially creates an unbalanced special education student ratio between public non-charter schools and public charters. This dissertation examines the enrollment rates of special education students between public charters and public non-charter schools in a large, metropolitan American school district, over a five-year period. This body of work examines causality and the effect of enrollment data along with the potential implications.

Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina: Measuring The Impact Of The Recovery School District On Student Outcomes, Mark Perfect
Undergraduate Economic Review
This article builds on a recent body of research relating to the development of charter schools in New Orleans. In particular, this article employs two multivariate Ordinary Least Squares models as well as a Propensity Score Matching design to predict selected student outcomes based on given school characteristics. Although past research has determined that school outcomes in New Orleans have improved since Hurricane Katrina, this study finds that Recovery School District charter schools continue to perform worse than traditional New Orleans schools ten years after the disaster.
Different Choices: A Public School Community’S Responses To School Choice Reforms, Amanda U. Potterton
Different Choices: A Public School Community’S Responses To School Choice Reforms, Amanda U. Potterton
The Qualitative Report
In the United States, state and federal reforms increasingly encourage the expansion of school choice policies. Debates about school choice contrast various concepts of freedom and equality with concerns about equity, justice, achievement, democratic accountability, profiting management organizations, and racial and class segregation. Arizona’s “market”-based school choice programs include over 600 charter schools, and the state’s open enrollment practices, public and private school tax credit allowances, and Empowerment Scholarships, (closely related to vouchers), flourish. This qualitative analysis explores one district-run public school and its surrounding community, and I discuss socio-political and cultural tensions related to school choice reforms that exist …
How Intra-District School Choice And Competition Among Schools Impacts School Leadership: A Case Study Of Secondary School Principals, Chris Kohan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative, explanatory case study was to describe how traditional, magnet, and charter school principals in one Delaware school district responded to an environment of total school choice and how they made sense of their roles as a principal in the era of school choice. Hess’s (2010) organizational theory was the theoretical foundation for this study as selective enrollment schools, such as magnet and charter schools, would have direct and indirect effects on traditional schools The research questions for this study were: (a) How do traditional, magnet, and charter school principals make sense of the competition generated …

Do You Have A Learning Disability?: Exploring The Experiences Of Hmong Students With Special Needs In A Public Hmong Charter School, Vang Xiong
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Special education has been criticized for the practice of over-representing culturally and linguistically diverse students in special education programs. Asian American students appeared to be immune to this problem. However, when the demographics of the Asian racial group are disaggregated into individual Asian ethnic groups, there is evident of disproportionality. The purpose of the study was to explore how a charter school, serving predominantly Hmong students, addresses the issue of disproportionality pertaining to the Hmong population. Through an ethnographic research approach, the researcher engaged in participant-observation, interviewing three tenth-grade, Hmong male students, and five school staff members. The researcher found …

The research question addressed in this project was, how can educational assistants increase their self-efficacy of established classroom management strategies at an urban charter school? The project documents the creation of a quick reference guide for educational assistants (E.A.s) in a local education agency (LEA) on the topic of classroom management. The project uses the two established classroom management systems already in use in the LEA as its base. The quick reference guide is designed in such a way that E.A.s can reference it on the go, take it home to study, and practice the skills in real-time, giving them …
Raising The Charter School Cap In Massachusetts: The Consequence Of An Uncapped Neoliberal Rationality, Nicole L. Semas-Schneeweis
Raising The Charter School Cap In Massachusetts: The Consequence Of An Uncapped Neoliberal Rationality, Nicole L. Semas-Schneeweis
The William & Mary Educational Review
In September 2015, Governor Charlie Baker announced his support for raising the charter school cap in Massachusetts. This announcement has sparked a heated debate about funding for public education that problematically ignores neoliberal ideology. The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 began a reign of neoliberalism impacting education policies. An Act Relative to the Achievement Gap in 2010 saw an intensification of this privatization and free market ideology with its explicit support of charter alternatives. Achievement has become based on standardized assessments that presume a static, ethnocentric view of knowledge. Neoliberal ideology reinforces white Eurocentrism and a meritocratic rationale, disregarding …

A View From Within: A School Founder's View Of Educating Children From The Inside Out, Allison B. Slade
Dissertations
The media and political affiliations often color the view of charter schools within different sectors of the community. However, there is no argument that there is much to be done improve achievement in our public school systems across the country, especially those who educate high numbers of often marginalized populations. This study looks at one charter school in Chicago, Illinois, which has a focused mission and vision to “Educate Children from the Inside Out.” It examines the school through the social science portraiture method. Data collection includes interviews with current and former staff and students, observations, review of school documents, …
