Literacy And Covid-19 : Elementary Students' Reading Performance Through A Global Pandemic, Emmett Mcgregor Schweiger Jan 2022

Literacy And Covid-19 : Elementary Students' Reading Performance Through A Global Pandemic, Emmett Mcgregor Schweiger

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The critical area of literacy instruction has long relied on the use of measurement tools and the resulting data to identify at-risk readers and deliver needed supports. When the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruption to education, measurement practices were altered and there was limited existing research available to predict the potential impact of the pandemic on literacy development. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the reading performance of students in a Southern Tier New York elementary school before and during the pandemic, utilizing existing data from fall 2019 to spring 2021. Additionally, this study sought to evaluate the …

The Ability Of Dibels To Predict Proficiency On The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment And The Wida Access For Ells, Katherine Schultz Jan 2022

The Ability Of Dibels To Predict Proficiency On The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment And The Wida Access For Ells, Katherine Schultz

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Recent educational reform gave birth to accountability testing and development of student sub-groups meant to track gaps in achievement. Because of the high-stakes nature of these assessments, educators have sought efficient progress monitoring tools. Oral reading fluency’s link to overall reading success has made it a desirable means of measuring growth. This link is well researched with native English speakers but less researched with English learners. This research seeks to determine if the commercially-produced oral reading fluency suite of assessments, DIBELS, can predict reading success on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) in English learners to the same degree as with …

Can Curriculum-Based Measures And Teacher Ranking Predict End-Of-Year Achievement For Students Who Are Gifted Or High-Achieving?, Bruce Alan Ewing May 2016

Can Curriculum-Based Measures And Teacher Ranking Predict End-Of-Year Achievement For Students Who Are Gifted Or High-Achieving?, Bruce Alan Ewing

Doctoral Dissertations

The lack of cohesion and oversight in federal and state laws that outline identifying and serving gifted/high ability students have been cited by researchers and practitioners as a hindrance in the development of programming designed to serve these populations (National Association for Gifted Children, 2014). Controversy over definitions of giftedness and the role of schools in identifying and serving gifted students indicate that policy and practice in gifted education are highly inconsistent. In partial response, researchers in gifted education have begun to call for the extension of the response-to-intervention (RTI) model to identify and serve gifted students, leading to questions …

Test-Retest Reliability Of Curriculum-Based Measurement Written Expression Probes, Mallory Hart Aug 2014

Test-Retest Reliability Of Curriculum-Based Measurement Written Expression Probes, Mallory Hart

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Despite the growing popularity and utilization of Curriculum-Based Measurement for assessing students’ academic skills and for progress monitoring, little attention has been devoted to the area of written expression. Very few studies have been conducted to assess test-retest reliability. Only three previous studies were identified that examined the test-retest reliability of written expression curriculum-based measures. To address this issue, the current study examined the test-retest reliability of five common scoring procedures with students in grades 2, 4, and 6. A one-week time interval was used. Results indicated that while test-retest correlations were statistically significant and often at a moderate to …

Vocabulary Matching : Potential For A Diagnostic Performance Indicator, Jodie Schraven Jan 2014

Vocabulary Matching : Potential For A Diagnostic Performance Indicator, Jodie Schraven

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Predictive validity was explored between vocabulary matching (VM) probe scores and the integrated Louisiana Education Assessment Program (iLEAP) social studies standardized subtest score for 224 sixth-grade students across demographic categories from one rural southeastern Louisiana school district. Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) conducted in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, 2007) produced Pearson correlations between .51 and .70 for five benchmark probes for the entire sample. Predictive cutscores created using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analyses and a diagnostic accuracy application software program illustrated that VM cutscores did not correctly predict which students would pass or fail with enough …

The Measurement Of Teachers' Implementation And Acceptability Of A Cbm Focus, Aaron K. Peterson May 2011

The Measurement Of Teachers' Implementation And Acceptability Of A Cbm Focus, Aaron K. Peterson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) is a method that teachers use to formatively assess progress in reading, math, writing, and spelling. In recent years, different data-management systems have been created to systematically organize, group, and monitor data on multiple students for teachers to make better instructional decisions. Most data-management-systems are fee-based and can be cost-prohibitive, but CBM Focus is a free program consisting of the same concepts, charting, and data-entry methods. This project measured the social validity and implementation fidelity of CBM Focus—a curriculum-based measurement data management system for recording student reading, writing, and math records. Eleven participating elementary teachers in this …
