A Comparative Case Study Of Alumni Of Two Multi-Term Civic Learning Programs, Ryan Brent Nilsen, Bryant Hutson, Lynn Blanchard, Monica Siems, Laurel Hirt, Tania Mitchell

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

This paper presents a comparative case study of the alumni of two multi-term civic learning programs that combine academic service-learning with a series of other student experiences such as the creation of online portfolios and capstone experiences over at least four semesters of an undergraduate education. Findings of this study suggest that alumni perceive substantial impact on their civic and professional experiences after graduation because of their participation in such programs while undergraduates.

The British Council, in partnership with ACER, designed and developed a survey consisting of an online questionnaire and interviews, to gather information from international alumni systematically and periodically, with the purpose of building a valuable longitudinal dataset. Objective: The exigency for higher education to exhibit outcomes aligning with career competencies has intensified, driven by external pressures favoring job-specific training. Amidst shifting career tendencies of Generations Y and Z and the advent of artificial intelligence-led automation, the valuation of different college majors has come under scrutiny. This study aims to dissect the prevailing assumptions and explore the satisfaction and career commitment levels among individuals with career-focused degrees.

Alumni giving is increasingly important to the vitality of institutions of higher education. With governmental financial support of public institutions steadily declining, understanding philanthropic giving is more important than ever. Advancement offices that serve alumni populations benefit from analyzing predictors of the behavioral phenomenon of charitable giving. It is also known that enrollment in distance education programs is on the rise in the United States.
