An Examination Of The Importance Of Academic Support Programs For Two-Year College Student-Athletes, Amanda J. Glaza

Culminating Experience Projects

Literature has shown that there are many positive practices in supporting community college student-athletes, but the sheer number of positive practices out there can be overwhelming and having a summary of practices could be helpful for academic advisors to properly serve this unique population. This is necessary as research has revealed that the number of academic advisors who feel equipped to support community college student-athletes is low. Community college student-athletes are a unique population, with a diverse variety of needs. This project examines intrusive academic advising, enrollment and eligibility requirements for community college student-athletes, tutorial services and peer academic mentoring. …

Help, Is It Worth It For Me(N)?: A Study Of Factors Affecting Black Men's Perception Of Resource Management Strategies In Community College, Bryce E. Tolbert

Theses and Dissertations

Nationally, men of color are graduating college at the lowest rates of all race gender subgroups. Prior research suggests this population faces unique obstacles as it relates to race and gender and these challenges are often invisible and difficult to resolve. Academic supports can help students overcome these obstacles; however, it is not clear that they are influencing Black men’s academic help-seeking behavior and, thus, their educational outcomes. Using the Motivated Learning Strategies Questionnaire and data from Knight Community College, two multiple regressions and three t-test were used to explore the relationship between value, expectancy, program participation and resource management …

Holistic Approach To Academic Support At Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy, Amy Keck, Diane Hinterlong

Publications & Research

Academic support is critical to the success of students, and gifted students are no exception. The support they need is as unique as the students themselves. The difficulty of the material challenges some students, some struggle with time management, others struggle with breaking tasks into smaller chunks and other executive functions. The challenges become even more significant in a residential environment where students need to adjust to living and learning independently while also developing new social groups. Parents may also need assistance in helping students transition into this new, more independent role. Presenters will share application-based ideas from real-time programs, …

Creating Scholar Athletes: Investigating The Academic Support Provided To High School Student Athletes In Southern California High Schools, Melinda Love

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

This study used semi-structured interviews of athletic directors to present a descriptive narrative of academic support provided to student athletes in five Southern California high schools. These interviews highlighted what supports were provided as well as structures that would better support student athletes. The impetus of this study was the mixed findings regarding the academic performance of student athletes in comparison to their non-athlete peers. Academic Support Of Division I Head Coaches: Perceptions Of Student-Athletes, Mikaela M. Raddatz

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

Intercollegiate athletics in the United States have continuously become more commercialized, pressuring athletics departments and coaches to produce winning teams. The commanding expectations for successful programs have been thought to take away from the academic mission of colleges and universities, focusing efforts on athletics over academics. This phenomenon has been examined, but the role head coaches play in support of student-athlete academics has yet to be explored.

The purpose of this study is to measure student-athlete perception of academic support from Division I head coaches. Current literature demonstrates the strong influence of coaches on student-athletes, but the effect in the …
