Many classrooms, across all academic domains (reading, math, science, and social studies), are not culturally inclusive in terms of student race and ethnicity. As teachers, we can address this problem by promoting and incorporating culturally inclusive practices as we present subject content. This article brings together three conceptualizations —Disciplinary Literacy (DL) (Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008), Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) (Ladson-Billings, 1995, 2009), and the African Verbal Tradition (AVT) (Smitherman, 2000)— to demonstrate how a groundbreaking event in history, such as the Civil Rights March on Washington is taught through the confluence of literacy practices reading, writing, and thinking--specifically, historical practices in social studies such as sourcing, contextualization, and corroboration.

This research study was designed to focus on what factors can contribute to the successful integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) education programs for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) students within the community. The goal of this study is to determine which factors are contributing to the lack of engagement among BIPOC students in STEAM education and how educators can mitigate these factors. White supremacy and domination are the backbone foundation of the United States and have been long documented in its history. The prevalence of whiteness and white supremacy is not isolated to social situations or commerce but fundamentally ingrained in the education system. While Brown v. the Board of Education abolished the notion of separate but equal, the education of a diverse American student population remains predominantly at the hands of White, female educators. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe strategies middle-school teachers implement that support mixed-race students in rural southeast Texas schools. This study is framed conceptually utilizing culturally responsive pedagogy and social emotional learning. Seven middle-school teachers were interviewed and provided artifacts to support the interviews. The primary findings identified strategies for teachers to examine their biases, intentionally plan social emotional lessons, remain open-minded and nonjudgmental, and engage in authentic professional development. The purpose of this research was to investigate how students in a third-grade classroom can engage with multicultural texts and learn about cultures that are different from their own. Furthermore, it investigated the impact of multicultural literature on respect and kindness in a classroom community. Throughout the four-week study, students read twelve different multicultural texts and engaged in classroom discussions during Morning Meeting. Students participated in group discussions expressing their ideas, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs related to the context of the books read. This study explored K-4 teachers and school district curriculum leadership’s understanding of and inclination to implement culturally relevant pedagogy as a framework for teaching reading, especially for African American students. This qualitative study sought the potential basis that teachers and educational leaders retain from their experiences and perspectives regarding using culturally relevant pedagogy as a framework for educating minority students. It was conducted in a rural school district located in eastern North Carolina; all 13 elementary schools in the school district had teachers who participated.
