While many education scholars have discussed the racist and neoliberal capitalist relations that operate through education reform with impunity, the concept and tracing of raciality illuminates ethical, juridical, and economic dimensions that shape how one comes to know and intervene in the lives of the so-called educationally disadvantaged. In this dissertation, the researcher traces how the arsenal of racial knowledge works with/in and through US neoliberal education reform by studying out of school learning contexts. Abstract

Black women are significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles, particularly at predominately white institutions (PWIs). The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of Black women at predominately white institutions who hold mid-level management roles and aspire to advance to senior leadership. This study details the experiences of five Black women who shared their stories of rising above racial and gender oppressions by overcoming stereotypes, understanding the value in mentorships and sponsorships, utilizing their systems of support and being empowered in their relationships with other Black women. The present study investigated the lived experiences of Black women on a predominantly White institution (PWI) campus in the South as they relate to the core themes of Patricia Hill Collins’ Black Feminist Thought (BFT). The core themes of BFT that were the focus of the research were Self-Definition/Empowerment, Safe Space, Controlling Images, Invisibility/Sense of Belonging. Sista circle methodology was used as the form of inquiry with two 60-minute sessions over a two-month span.
