Do Bullying Interventions Work? The Educators’ Perspective, James P. Kalis Edd, Karen H. Larwin Phd
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
This research examined the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) through the perspective of teachers located in a northeast Ohio county who received a grant to implement the program over a period of several years. The current investigation involved a Likert-style questions which were developed using the general implementation requirements of the OBPP. Teacher perception data were collected regarding implementation level, sustainability, support from other stakeholders, strengths, and weaknesses of the program, and whether they perceive it to reduce instances of bullying. Other moderators affecting perceptions were examined. These moderators include time, training, gender of teacher, years of experience, age of …
Organizational Original Design: Parental Responsibility For Christian Education And Faith Development In The Home, Brandi L. Ginty
Organizational Original Design: Parental Responsibility For Christian Education And Faith Development In The Home, Brandi L. Ginty
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
This study will focus on biblical texts and Hebrew cultural evidence to assert that Christian education in the home was mandated by God as a function of parental leadership (Anthony, 2006; Birch, 1983; Bunge, 2008; Cox, 2006; French, 2013; Hall, 1981; Van Niekerk & Breed, 2018). An examination of the biblical text will support the claim that faith development was intended to begin with the relationship between parents and their children (Gaebelein, 1976; Walton, 2001; Knight, 2006). By considering the role of the parents and the educational environment of the home as the original organizational design for equipping the next …

Transformational Leadership And Organizational Citizenship Behavior Motives In Teachers, Jeremy Davis, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer, Suzanne B. Miller, Katherine Fallon
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
A principal’s leadership is a key part to the success of a school as their leadership guides both instructional and organizational outcomes. Teachers often work beyond their formal duties to see that all their students have their needs met. This is referred to as an Organizational Citizenship Behavior (i.e., when followers display behaviors that benefit the organization or its members beyond their current job requirements). This study investigated the relationship between principal’s transformational leadership and teachers’ Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and related motivating factors. Participants from a suburban school district completed a questionnaire based on their perceptions of their principal’s leadership …
Partners In Leadership: Training The Next Generation Of Executive Leaders, Sherry Hoyle, Jeremy Spielman
Partners In Leadership: Training The Next Generation Of Executive Leaders, Sherry Hoyle, Jeremy Spielman
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
Like other states, South Carolina has experienced a shortage of educators at all organizational levels within its school districts. Given this dynamic and the relatively limited opportunities for practitioners to earn advanced degrees, several South Carolina institutions of higher education banded together to form a consortium that would provide additional opportunities for educators to earn the degree of Educational Specialist (EdS) with the potential to seamlessly complete doctoral studies. This consortium partnership resulted in a new doctoral program and new EdS programs, all based on the principles of the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). The synergy that unfolded …
The Role Of Context On Leadership Transition: Building To District-Level Leadership, Samuel Fancera
The Role Of Context On Leadership Transition: Building To District-Level Leadership, Samuel Fancera
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The purpose of this inquiry was to understand how a building-level leader utilized context-responsive leadership practices to facilitate the transition from a building to district-level school leadership position. I used qualitative research methods to study the context-responsive leadership of a first-year assistant superintendent who transitioned from the principalship in the same school district. This study’s main finding indicates the leadership experiences attained as a school principal are valuable preparation to understand the external and internal school contextual factors, and to conduct the duties and tasks associated with this district-level leadership position. The paper concludes with a discussion of the results …

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
With the adoption of such initiatives as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and the College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI), there is increasing pressure for students to meet and exceed performance expectations. This is easier said than done, especially given that not all organizational structures are helpful to student performance. A quantitative, correlational study was done to determine the relationship between school organization and school performance within Georgia schools. Subgroup comparisons between high and low performing schools were included in analyses. Results showed that high organizational effectiveness was associated with high student performance outcomes. …

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
This article describes how East Carolina University’s Doctor of Education (EdD) program has undergone a dramatic redesign over the past decade to better prepare PK-12 administrators for the challenges of 21st century school district leadership, with an emphasis on superintendency. Explored are the impetus for the redesign, resulting in renewed emphasis on service, the development of signature pedagogies that better engage students, and evidence of the success of subsequent program graduates. Included are the specific steps – and missteps – taken by faculty to advance program redesign, the balance achieved between theory and practice, and accompanying reflections. Students are …

Letter From The Editors, Mitch Porter, Walter Hart Ed.D.
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
The position of school superintendent has become far more complex than when it was first introduced in Buffalo, New York in 1837. Reform efforts of the 1980’s shifted the focus of the role to student achievement, even though a host of managerial responsibilities related to finance, human resources, transportation, building maintenance, and public relations remained. More recently, superintendents have been expected to also address an array of societal issues, including diversification of students and staff, increased governmental mandates, the explosion of technology, and the globalization of society. Sadly, these multi-faceted demands have occurred in a context of shrinking resources. Through …

Closing The Financial Need Gap Through Annual Giving And Donor Relations, Timothy Edelen
Education Projects
Higher education is currently in a crisis that is affecting institutions of all sizes. As the allotted funds from federal and state governments decrease and additional revenue-generating areas such as tuition fail to close the need gap, many universities and colleges find themselves in a budget crisis. This crisis affects public and private higher education institutions, resulting in the need for philanthropic support from outside sources. Institutions of higher education, private and public alike, are turning to private giving to meet budgetary demands. As a result of this crisis, both public and private higher education institutions turn to philanthropy to …

M&Ms: Mentors And Mentees, Melody B. Johnson
Education Projects
This project focused on the challenge of meeting the needs of at-risk students in an elementary school setting. In response to the literature, we designed and implemented a school-based mentoring program. This project examined whether a face-to-face mentoring program in this school with these students could meet three goals: provide students regular contact with a caring adult, increase student confidence in themselves or their environments, and reduce behavior infractions. These students, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, were identified for social-emotional and/or behavior issues by their teachers, administration, or guidance counselor. School employees served as the pool for mentors, and …

Higher Education Student Leadership Program, Heather Harrison
Education Projects
Leadership development programs have increased over the past 2 decades. Institutions of higher education have found value in giving students the tools to ignite and showcase soft leadership skills such as communication, time management, and self-awareness within the workplace and to gain better employment post-college through leadership development programs. Research shows that students value programs that include workshops and tools from diverse authors and presenters, mentorship, and assistance with connecting with their peers. Leadership development programs are delivered through the curriculum in the classroom, programs designed through student affairs offices or centers, and students engaging in leadership positions on campus, …

Similar to most universities in the United States, Gardner-Webb University lists leadership development in their students as a high priority. The first two sentences in the Gardner-Webb University strategic plan state,
The mission of Gardner-Webb University is to prepare graduates for leadership and service in their professional careers and in their personal lives. Rigorous and innovative degree programs, combined with distinctive experiential learning opportunities, shape students into thinkers, doers, and world-changers. (Gardner-Webb University, 2021a, p. 1)
There are several key words in these sentences that warrant further discussion. First, leadership development is an instrumental aspect of the core mission of …
Collective Leadership Practices Improve Teacher Efficacy And School Culture, Vickie Stine
Collective Leadership Practices Improve Teacher Efficacy And School Culture, Vickie Stine
Education Projects
Experience has shown, and research correlates, teachers are the single most important school-related factor affecting student achievement. For students, the difference between having a quality teacher and having an incompetent teacher can exceed one grade-level equivalent in annual achievement growth (Hanushek et al.,1992). Shortages in the teaching force continue to increase nationwide, reaching crisis proportions. Challenges facing educators, including ever-changing needs of students, adjustments in education services, increased documentation requirements, lagging student outcomes, new initiatives, discipline concerns, and the expectation for teachers to perform to meet ever-increasing demands have resulted in disengagement of educators and decisions from them to leave …
Building Leaders In Policing: Using Leadership Characteristics And Attributes To Develop First-Line Supervisors And Line Officers, Brad Stewart
Education Projects
Organizational effectiveness and legitimacy in policing are largely based on public perception witnessed predominantly through interactions with line officers and first-line supervisors. The demand for highly effective first-line supervisors falls short as agencies are ill-equipped to provide leader development. This mixed methods study examined the characteristics and attributes of first-line supervisors as perceived by line officers in the Asheboro, North Carolina Police Department. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: (a) Which dominant characteristics and attributes are perceived by police officers to be associated with leader efficacy; (b) Which of the perceived characteristics and attributes contribute to the development …

Creating A Nonprofit Organization To Combat Health And Healthcare Disparities Impacting Black Women, Chernee M. Gerald
Education Projects
Adequate healthcare is essential to the lives of all Americans; however, disparities exist in the quality of care and services available to marginalized groups in this country. For many years, there have been conversations and research conducted around the health and quality of healthcare provided to Black Americans; more specifically, the quality of care Black women receive. At the forefront of healthcare factors impacting Black women are breast cancer, maternal mortality, and the implicit bias of healthcare providers. This project uses survey data collected from Black women in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community to identify the most pressing health issues of Black …

An Online Course Quality Enhancement Project, Jonathan Davis
Education Projects
Between 2018 and 2019, according to the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement, the total reported distance education enrollment increased 129.1% (Straut & Boeke, 2020). This explosive increase in the number of students taking distance education courses during this timeframe is intriguing and undoubtedly increased further in 2020 and 2021 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the efforts of colleges and universities to shift courses online in order to continue operations while also preventing the spread of the virus. Moreover, there has been growing concern regarding student success in online courses and the quality of instruction provided via …

Building Brand Identity And Organizational Growth For A Small Media Company, Reginald L. China
Education Projects
The global Coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the need for increased media content. It also showed that media content was integral to communication and stakeholder engagement during community lockdowns. I worked with the Jones Media Company to gauge the need for media services in faith-based organizations. The survey results revealed that religious institutions are not exempt from using media content to engage congregations, the community, and potential members. According to Auxier and Anderson 2021, the ability to access multimedia content is in the palm of our hands. Their research showed that some 84% of adults ages 18 to 29 say they ever …
Disciplinary Policies And Practices: Dismantling The School To Prison Pipeline, Ricky Johnson
Disciplinary Policies And Practices: Dismantling The School To Prison Pipeline, Ricky Johnson
Education Projects
Dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline has been a problem for decades that seems to have come to no answer. This project aims to analyze the current conditions and create ways to dismantle the pipeline through new policy, leadership, alternative practices, and school/ community programs. The disproportionate rates of suspension and expulsion and their ties to the juvenile justice system, along with everything dealing with education, should be alarming to most. However, far too often, these alarming numbers are swept under the rug. It is beyond time for disciplinary policy and practice change on a micro and macro level; something must be …

This consultancy project was designed to assist Anson County, North Carolina with understanding the impacts of enacting countywide zoning and how to develop a zoning ordinance. While a vast majority of cities and counties in North Carolina have zoning throughout their jurisdiction, Anson County does not. This project revealed the economic impacts of countywide zoning by assessing both qualitative and quantitative data, including a review of the literature. The literature review concluded counties that enact zoning increase economic or job opportunities. As evidence, a Georgia study concluded the average employment for counties with a zoning ordinance was more than double …

Developing A Small Youth Nonprofit Board Of Directors To Support Fundraising And Volunteer Engagement, Blayre C. Penn
Education Projects
Nonprofit organizations that provide services for young people are immense assets within urban communities. These organizations impart mentorship and provide positive activities to enrich the lives of young citizens who may or may not have access to these opportunities provided elsewhere at a cost. However, as noteworthy of a benefit, the management of nonprofits often threatens their sustainability. If the understanding of organizational blind spots regarding volunteer retention, sustainability of funding, and board leadership is lacking, decision-making on strategic planning becomes very difficult (Sand, 2005). This consultancy project explores the best practices for managing a small nonprofit that focuses on …
