Understanding Self-Efficacy Of Regional University Adjunct Faculty: A Qualitative Case Study, Aletta Brook Purdum

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the self-efficacy of adjunct faculty at Colonial State University (CSU; a pseudonym). The theories guiding this study were Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy and Maslow’s human motivation theory since motivation-impacting self-efficacy was described as a dynamic that has definitive antecedents, but confidence in one’s abilities and skills can change as a result of personal achievements, individual experiences, outside influences, and purpose. This qualitative research was conducted to improve understanding about the self-efficacy of regional university adjunct faculty. There was a plethora of research available about adjunct faculty but none of that …

Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders At A Hispanic Serving Institution: A Qualitative Case Study Of Students’ Experiences, Stephen P. Loynaz

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study focuses on the experiences of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in higher education. It was important to conduct this study because of the rising numbers of students with ASD in higher education and the scant amount of research available about how to best serve them depending on their actual needs, not the perceived needs stated by experts based on research from K-12 student populations, or the perceived needs of these students stated by their parents or other service providers or faculty. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine students from a Hispanic-serving institution in the Southeast United …

The Experiences Of Underrepresented Faculty And Administrators: A Study Of Cultural Taxation, Katrina N. Amie Mar 2020

The Experiences Of Underrepresented Faculty And Administrators: A Study Of Cultural Taxation, Katrina N. Amie

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cultural taxation is a term used by some to describe the additional work required of faculty of color as representatives of their racial or ethnic groups. Padilla (1994) defines cultural taxation as “situations that are imposed [on faculty]... by the administration.” Many prior studies about cultural taxation focus on the experiences of faculty of color at predominately White institutions and understanding of this phenomenon is heavily aligned with those spaces and circumstances. While much of the literature presents the additional workload for underrepresented faculty as damaging (Hirshfield & Joseph, 2011; Pololi et al., 2010; Hassouneh et al., 2014; Mahoney et …

Meta-Analysis Of Asian Students’ Acculturative Stress In U.S. Higher Education, Chi Yun Moon, Patricia Larke

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Most studies examining acculturative stress have found that students of Asian decent experience higher levels of acculturative stress in American higher education institutions than do students of European decent, but effect sizes have ranged widely, and the results of comparisons between Asians and other ethnic groups are inconsistent. To obtain estimates of the magnitude of cultural group differences in acculturative stress, meta-analyses were conducted. Meta-analytic review of 13 studies exploring Asian students’ acculturative stress in higher education during the past two decades revealed that students of Asian decent experienced a higher level of acculturative stress when compared to students of …

Higher Education: Path Or Barrier To Opportunity?, Amanda Jd Simpfenderfer

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Higher education has long been viewed as the pathway to economic and social mobility within the United States and yet institutions have historically restricted access based on race, gender, and social class. This scholarly paper, explores, argues, and presents evidence to demonstrate how the impact of colonialism, neoliberalism, and cultural capital/wealth intersect and have served to mold higher education into a tool of oppression, by limiting access and attainment, to historically underserved and oppressed populations.

Approximately 75% of honors programs have thesis or capstone requirements (Savage & Cognard-Black, 2016). Seeing the need to provide structure, scaffolding and guidance for these undergraduates, librarians created a course, Introduction to the Honors Thesis, as a required course for 2nd semester Juniors in the Honors Program. In the course the frames of “Searching as Strategic Exploration” and “Information Creation as a Process” are taught. Students then demonstrate these frames through writing reflection papers, “source annotation” papers, and writing a prospectus. This includes an Introduction and Literature review to provide a solid foundation for the Senior level course …

The Pragmatist’S Call To Democratic Activism In Higher Education, Eric Thomas Weber Jan 2020

The Pragmatist’S Call To Democratic Activism In Higher Education, Eric Thomas Weber

Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications

This essay defends the Pragmatist’s call to activism in higher education, understanding it as a necessary development of good democratic inquiry. Some criticisms of activism have merit, but I distinguish crass or uncritical activism from judicious activism. I then argue that judicious activism in higher education and in philosophy is not only defensible, but both called for implicitly in the task of democratic education as well as an aspect of what John Dewey has articulated as the supreme intellectual obligation, namely to ensure that inquiry is put to use for the benefit of life.

"Change Is The Essential Process Of All Existence:" Transformation Through Civic Learning & Democratic Engagement's Theory, Molly Kerby

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

During the early years of the American Association of State Colleges & Universities’ (AASCU) American Democracy Project (ADP), a handful of civic-minded leaders in higher education began to grapple with what it meant to teach students to be engaged citizens. The project began with seven initiatives focusing on efforts such as voting, stewardship of land, political engagement, and citizenship to build a foundation for increasing civic literacy, democratic agency, and community engagement among college students (American Association of State Colleges and Universities, 2019). Membership and participation in ADP grew quickly and it seemed an organic revolution of sorts was building …
