Start-up packages are time limited financial and material resources offered by universities to incoming faculty during the hiring process. Previous research findings on gender equity within the start-up packages are mixed. Therefore, this study is exanimating the role of gender on the content of start-up packages, satisfaction with the packages, university honoring startup packages, and contribution of start-up packages to faculty professional development. Data corresponds to a Start-Up Package Satisfaction Survey of faculty at all ranks (N = 96) administered in an American Southeastern public research university in 2018. Results from this study indicated that there are significant differences between …

Chilean Teachers Responses To And Understanding Of Student Interaction With Diverse Peers In The Classroom, Javier Martín Campos-Martínez
Doctoral Dissertations
Chile’s educational inequality has sparked intense debates in recent years (Cabalin & Bellei, 2013; Stromquist & Sanyal, 2013). While there is a wide consensus concerning the crucial role that teachers play in fostering inclusion in the classroom, research suggests that Chilean teachers, often without intent or awareness, reinforce exclusionary student interactions marked by social class and gender hierarchies (Carrasco, Zamora, & Castillo, 2015; SERNAM, 2009; Tijoux, 2013). Although teachers’ motivation and concern for questions related to exclusion and inclusion in education are spreading, navigating exclusionary dynamics can be particularly challenging especially since teachers’ initial and continuing professional education seldom addresses …

Gender Equity In Outdoor Adventures: How Gender Constructs Shape Engagement At The University Of San Diego, Lauren Wong
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
Outdoor Adventures (OA) at the University of San Diego bridges the industries of outdoor education and higher education. This action research investigates the constructions of gender that inform programming and relationship building within OA. Through a survey and focus groups, I collected data from OA professional staff and student leaders. The purpose of this research was to explore how different genders engage with experiential learning in an outdoor setting through a lens of queer theory, by evaluating the engagement of OA professional staff and participants. My findings indicate that the constructs of gender inform the ways students experience their capacity …

A Phenomenological Study: The Lived Experiences Of Females Enrolled In Nontraditional Programs In Career And Technical Education, Shawna Beth Little
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of female graduates of nontraditional programs of study in career and technical education to better understand how their experiences influenced their career choices. A total of 11 female graduates from the same career and technical center located in rural, Southwestern Pennsylvania were selected to represent the population for this study. Lent, Brown, and Hackett’s (1994) Social Cognitive Career Theory was applied to examine how personal, behavioral, and environmental factors work together to influence an individual’s career choices. Data collection for this study featured semi-structured interviews with all participants, …

Women Coaches Navigating The Leadership Labyrinth At A Division Ii Regional Comprehensive University: Queering Discourse And Narratives, Julie A. Wienski
Higher Education: Doctoral Research Projects
Representation by female head coaches in the NCAA is at an all-time low. This study analyzed an institution (LSU) where women’s representation and gender equity is higher than average. Using a qualitative inquiry approach applying Critical Narrative and Foucauldian Dispositive Analyses in a queering fashion, the study explored ways in which institutional (macro) discourses shaped individual (micro) daily narratives. The overarching goal for this study was to reveal themes, language and discourse informing women’s coaches’ recruitment, retention and persistence at an NCAA Division II and Regional Comprehensive University excelling in gender equity and inclusivity.
Findings indicated power-knowledge connections via Foucauldian …
