Genealogical Plagiarism And The Library Community, Katherine S. Richers
Genealogical Plagiarism And The Library Community, Katherine S. Richers
School of Information Student Research Journal
Plagiarism is regarded as an academic crime, but can affect hobbies that rely on research and information sharing such as genealogy. The issue is well-known within the genealogy community. However, information professionals who aid genealogists in their research may not know enough about the issue. How can the library field respond constructively to the issue of uncontrolled plagiarism in genealogy? While the genealogy community condemns plagiarism and offers resources to correct it, current library practices concentrate on services and not on plagiarism education in the genealogy context, concentrating more on copyright and legal problems. The library field can help professionals …
A Tale Of Two Systems: One Library’S Experience Migrating To A New System And Back, Art Gutierrez
A Tale Of Two Systems: One Library’S Experience Migrating To A New System And Back, Art Gutierrez
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
The decision to migrate to a new library system is generally a long-term decision. The integrated library system, which some now call library platforms, impact many if not all facets of the library experience. Making a transition to a new system impacts all staff and our patrons on some level. In addition to the traditional services included in a library system we are increasingly seeing new services pop-up including electronic resource management systems, discovery layers, and program management systems, as part of the new library platforms. According to Marshall Breeding’s, Library Perceptions 2017 Survey, a little more than 28% of …

Lessons From The 1800s: Creating The Miss Porter's School Digital Archive, Deborah Smith
Lessons From The 1800s: Creating The Miss Porter's School Digital Archive, Deborah Smith
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
College preparatory (“prep”) schools have their roots in the New England region of the United States; many predate the nation's most illustrious colleges and universities. The archives at these schools contain items of importance to American history in the 1800s. However, few schools have trained archivists managing their physical collections and even fewer have created digital archives to increase access. Founded in 1848, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut was one of the first independent schools devoted to the education of young women. This article reviews the creation of the Porter's digital archive in 2018 and examines issues specific to …

Etd Plus: When Non-Traditional Is The New Normal, What's The Norm For Etd Programs?, Martin Halbert
Etd Plus: When Non-Traditional Is The New Normal, What's The Norm For Etd Programs?, Martin Halbert
2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The 2014-2017 ETDplus project brought together a diverse range of national stakeholders in the ETD curation process (professors, libraries, and service providers) to improve ETD policies and practices around research data and complex digital object management. The project research pivoted on the question “How will institutions ensure the longevity and availability of ETD research data and complex digital objects (e.g., software, multimedia files) that comprise an integral component of student theses and dissertations?” The research conducted in the course of the project revealed many emerging trends regarding ETDs, illuminating a significantly changed landscape of ETD curation needs in the 21st …

Embedded Instruction Collaboration: The Case Of The Ball State Digital History Portal, Douglas Seefeldt, Randi Beem, James Bradley
Digital Initiatives Symposium
This interdisciplinary panel will discuss a long-term project, “The Ball State Digital History Portal,” as a case study in digital initiatives in instruction and undergraduate research that features a collaboration between disciplinary faculty, an archivist, and a digital librarian. In this course, “History in the Digital Age,” undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of majors research, create, and build digital thematic research collection projects on topics in university history that aim to answer scholarly inquiries by conducting primary source research, selecting and digitizing archival materials, and creating metadata to accompany their curated items. An important part of the collaboration …

Review Of Reclaiming Indigenous Research In Higher Education, Rose Buchanan
Review Of Reclaiming Indigenous Research In Higher Education, Rose Buchanan
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Reclaiming Indigenous Research in Higher Education challenges basic assumptions of Western methodologies by demonstrating the value of Indigenous approaches to social scientific research. Contributors argue that Western institutions have long marginalized Indigenous perspectives in higher education, overlooking or outright dismissing the unique experiences of Indigenous students as well as the efforts of Indigenous researchers to explore and understand them. This volume is a necessary read for anyone wanting to promote greater diversity and inclusion in the academy and in supporting institutions like archives.

Frameworks For Collaboration: Articulating Information Literacy, And Rhetoric And Writing Goals In The Archives, Amy J. Lueck, Nadia Nasr
Staff publications, research, and presentations
Rhetoric and composition scholars have recently called our attention to the value of archival research in the undergraduate classroom, leading to rich collaborations with archivists and librarians at many institutions. As we engaged our own pedagogical collaboration as a university archivist and English faculty member, we realized that, though we might use slightly different language to articulate them or cite different sources in support of them, many of our learning goals overlapped. As we explored these goals together, we realized that they evidenced a correspondence in our disciplines that we had not explored—one that is reflected in our fields’ recent …
