Conquering Math Anxiety, Kendra Ellett Dec 2017

Conquering Math Anxiety, Kendra Ellett

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Much of the research on math anxiety suggests low test scores and feelings of disenchantment are direct consequences of math anxiety, and other literature goes further in asserting math anxiety puts students’ futures and academic experiences on the line. A review of the literature indicates a variety of math pedagogical methods which have been specifically designed to assuage the symptoms of math anxiety: subject integration, creative methods, visual/kinesthetic models and real life …

The Perceptions Of Teachers In A K-8 School On The Implementation And Impact Of Culturally Responsive-Positive Behavior Interventions And Supports (Cr-Pbis), Kathleen Ellwood Dec 2017

The Perceptions Of Teachers In A K-8 School On The Implementation And Impact Of Culturally Responsive-Positive Behavior Interventions And Supports (Cr-Pbis), Kathleen Ellwood

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Despite decades of effort to change disciplinary practices in American schools, racial disparities continue and are most prevalent for Black students, according to national Office Disciplinary Referral data. While Culturally Responsive-Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (CR-PBIS) is the result of years of adjustments to weave cultural responsiveness into Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) systems and decrease racial disciplinary disparities, the results at K-12 schools have been inconsistent. Cultural Race Theory, which recognizes racism is reflected in all societal systems and is the foundation for this study, may provide a clue as to why racial disciplinary disparities continue. This study …

Aldeane Comito Ries Elementary School, Ashley Mullins Dec 2017

Aldeane Comito Ries Elementary School, Ashley Mullins

First-Year Seminar Posters (COE 102/103)

While I volunteered in a kindergarten classroom, the real problem is that Nevada doesn’t spend enough money on preschools which leads to children coming into kindergarten without the proper level of knowledge (Takashi). Part of this problem is that students come into kindergarten with delays in language and vocabulary (Rogers). I addressed this issue by helping the students with their letters and encouraging them to read the signs that the kindergarten teacher at Ries Elementary School had up around the classroom. Nevada has also only recently implemented standards for preschool (Gwertz). However, this doesn’t seem to make a difference as …

According to J Stuart Elborn (2016), a medical professor from Queen’s University Belfast, youth that grow up with this disease “have shown a high prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with cystic fibrosis and parent caregivers.” It greatly affects a person when they are feel like it is a burden to take care of themselves. Promoting Student Success: Bilingual Education Best Practices And Research Flaws, Lillian Fassero Dec 2017

Promoting Student Success: Bilingual Education Best Practices And Research Flaws, Lillian Fassero

Senior Honors Theses

This paper first determines the benefits which bilingual education offers and then compares transitional, dual-language, and heritage language maintenance programs. After exploring the outcomes, contexts, and practical implications of the various bilingual programs, this paper explores the oversight in most bilingual studies, which assess students’ syntax and semantics while neglecting their understanding of pragmatics and discourse structures (Maxwell-Reid, 2011). Incorporating information from recent studies which question traditional understandings of bilingualism and argue that biliteracy requires more than grammatical and vocabulary instruction, this paper proposes modifications in current research strategies and suggests best practices for transitional, dual-language, and heritage maintenance programs.
