A Circle With Edges: How Story Time Privileges The Abled Learner, Melissa Tsuei

Takes a critical look at one of the commonplace features of early childhood classrooms—story time. In her essay, Melissa considers the ways in which story time reinforces unequal power dynamics for diverse learners by privileging the able-bodied learner. In response, Melissa creates and presents the SPHERE model, which promotes active engagement and shared dialogue through collaborative storytelling and nurtures an inclusive literacy-learning environment.

Individual-Level And Socio-Contextual Influences On Body Mass Index And Achievement In Adolescence To Young Adulthood, Mellissa S. Gordon

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

Research suggests there are factors that may exacerbate or otherwise serve as a protective factor for the effects being overweight. This study explores the association between BMI and adolescent’s academic achievement, and the moderating effects of individual-level (e.g., race/ethnicity) and socio-contextual factors (e.g., economic disadvantage) on this association. Furthermore, research suggests that overweight adolescents are at an increased risk of becoming overweight adults. As such, other developmental outcomes may be impacted as adolescents mature into young adulthood. Given this likelihood, the association between BMI and achievement over time was also tested. Undertaken study assessed the level of ecological knowledge among forest guards in southern Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was used for study. A structured questionnaire was administered to 60 respondents that are employed by forest guards system. Central question the study attempts to answer is the level of knowledge of the ecosystem among forest guards. Analysis of data revealed that forest guards have inadequate knowledge of ecosystem. Calculated mean score of respondents was 14.25. This mean score is lower than theoretical mean of 16 (80%).
