Participants were surveyed to determine which standards-based grading practices were most welcomed among middle school students, parents, teachers, and administrators. In Missouri, districts are assessed in accordance with the fifth edition of the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) which results in an Annual Performance Report (APR) score (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education [MODESE], 2014d). The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to determine if the literacy intervention program for reluctant readers in one middle school was effective as measured by an increase in student reading scores measured by the Student Reading Inventory Assessment. I investigated perceptions of 100 students and 28 teachers regarding the literacy intervention program through the use of district-administered surveys. I also interviewed eight teachers regarding their delivery of the literacy interventions in the classroom setting. Though the therapists facilitating those groups observed progress, the researcher witnessed no real-life application outside of class. This dissertation examined the relationship between students attending a writing center and the change in students’ writing performance over the course of a semester. The study also sought to determine whether demographics (age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, and whether a student is a first-generation college student) were related to students’ change in writing after they attended a college writing center.

Five Mississippi colleges and universities participated in the study. The study began with 110 students; however, only 78 students submitted two essays during the semester. Of those, 34 reported that they attended the writing center, 28 reported that they did …

(2012, p. 2) has shown African American students rank the lowest in American College Test (ACT) scores of all racial groups. The use of test-based accountability has expanded beyond measurements of school effectiveness to include measurements of teacher effectiveness. However, whereas the use of test-based accountability has expanded, the understanding of the statistical methodologies used in accountability systems has not kept pace. Currently, Student Growth Percentiles and value-added modeling are the most prevalent methodologies for estimating annual student growth. Each of these methodologies is regression-based and relies on scale scores from standardized assessments. The purpose of this quantitative study was to identify the personal characteristics that predicted the study outcome of students in higher education. Study outcome was defined as a student’s grade point average and re-enrolling for the following semester. Multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate whether a student’s former education, personality characteristics, orientation on learning, and study approach influenced study outcome.
