Assessing Research Data Management Practices Of Faculty At Carnegie Mellon University, Steve Van Tuyl, Gabrielle Michalek

Gabrielle Michalek

INTRODUCTION Recent changes to requirements for research data management by federal granting agencies
and by other funding institutions have resulted in the emergence of institutional support for these requirements.
At CMU, we sought to formalize assessment of research data management practices of researchers at the
institution by launching a faculty survey and conducting a number of interviews with researchers. METHODS
We submitted a survey on research data management practices to a sample of faculty including questions
about data production, documentation, management, and sharing practices. The survey was coupled with
in-depth interviews with a subset of faculty. We also make estimates …

When The Due Date Is Not The “Do” Date!, Theresa M. Mastrianni Nov 2015

When The Due Date Is Not The “Do” Date!, Theresa M. Mastrianni

Publications and Research

Our students consistently hand in assignments late, or complete them at the last minute. Why is it that they know about assignments all term long yet only begin them the night before the assignment is due? Based on a career-focused learning community at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, this article looks at ways to help our “millennial” students develop better time management skills. It shows how time management and prioritizing can be introduced as a tool for success in college and life and offers suggestions to better engage students in getting assignments done in a …

In this manuscript, we describe the initial steps of an international program of prevention research in Monterrey, México. Specifically, we present a feasibility study focused on exploring the level of acceptability reported by a group of Mexican mothers who were exposed to a culturally adapted parenting intervention originally developed in the United States. The efficacious intervention adapted in this investigation is known as Parent Management Training, the Oregon Model (PMTO®). Following a description of our international partnership, we describe the implementation of the pilot study aimed at determining initial feasibility. Qualitative data provided by 40 Mexican mothers exposed to the …

Three Littleppigs In A Sandwich: Towards Characteristics Of A Sandwiched 5 Storytelling-Based Tangible System For Chinese Primary School English, Todd Cochrane, Hongwei Pan, Eddy Hui

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Work towards identifying characteristics of sandwich storytelling based tangible systems for Chinese Primary School English instruction starts with principles determined for Chinese primary school children when learning English. These principles are considered in the context of sandwiched storytelling. A review of a number of tangible projects for education presents the scope of tangible systems as they are applied in education. These lead to emerging themes, such as scale, that determine constraints on interaction design. A snippet from the traditional story the Three Little Pigs is used to reflect on characteristics of the design and implementation of this tangible system.

Teaching For Diversity And Equity: Scholarship And Practice, Elizabeth Mccormack, Esther Chiang, Jancy Munguia

Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference

Research has shown that factors such as race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status can have a significant impact on a student’s ability to complete a college degree. As our classrooms become more culturally and experientially diverse, what can we as faculty do to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed? There is a growing body of research that identifies issues that low-income, first-generation, underrepresented minority, and international students face and describes tested strategies for helping students overcome them. Our goal in this workshop is share these findings with faculty and empower them to adapt and integrate relevant strategies into …

Incorporating Online Materials And Digital Learning/Assessing Tools Into Advanced Chinese Newspaper Reading And News Watching, Ying Wang, Lisha Xu

Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference

This is the report of a year-long blended learning project designed for advanced Chinese newspaper reading and news video watching. In advanced Chinese learning, newspaper reading and news video watching are considered quite challenging for Chinese language learners for their formal style, large and time-sensitive vocabulary, and limited exposure through traditional ways of learning/teaching. To meet these challenges, we incorporated three blended learning components into the traditional language teaching/learning, including: online video news subtitling, the digital exercises and assessment system, and computerized vocabulary-learning modules tailored to the course materials used for two advanced Chinese classes. The project is carried out …

Teaching To Increase Diversity And Equity: Scholarship And Practice, Elizabeth Mccormack, Jennifer Spohrer, Esther Chiang, Jancy Munguia

Blended Learning Research and Open Educational Resources

As our classrooms become more culturally and experientially diverse, what can we on our campuses do to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed? Many professional development opportunities aimed at helping faculty enhance their teaching practices often overlook the role of cultural competence in teaching and learning and fail to effectively integrate cultural sensitivity with high impact pedagogies. Factors such as race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status can have a significant impact on a student’s educational experiences. There is a growing body of research that identifies such issues and describes tested strategies for helping both faculty and students overcome …

Hybridpod - Episode 3 Assessment And Generosity, Asao Inoue Mar 2015

Hybridpod - Episode 3 Assessment And Generosity, Asao Inoue

Asao Inoue

The traditional take on assessment positions the teacher (or the state) as the one with all the answers and asks students to prove that they can figure out what the testers want them to know. Think of AP exams, SATs/ACTs/GREs, and loads of other acronym-derived test names, notably including statewide benchmark testing made widespread in America by No Child Left Behind legislation from 2001. In short, there’s significant inertia behind standardized testing that critical pedagogy needs to address in order to reform traditional education.
In this episode, we’ll return to Kris Shaffer and Asao Inoue to pick up the assessment-focused parts of their conversations …

Hybridpop - Episode 2 Compassion In The Classroom, Asao Inoue Feb 2015

Hybridpop - Episode 2 Compassion In The Classroom, Asao Inoue

Asao Inoue

Maha Bali’s featured column on Hybrid Pedagogy prompted the topic of this episode — compassion — but from an unusual angle. She and I talked about the problems we see with the way plagiarism is presented, discussed, and treated systemically. We thought that common systems that check finished work for signs of plagiarism turn it into a punitive situation, rather than a teaching opportunity. That’s the big difference between the student experience of plagiarism and the academic understanding of it. What if we looked at citation as a compassionate authorial act? Could we situate quoting and referencing as an act of academic …

On Reading & Teaching The Modern Long Poem, With Reference To Williams's 'Paterson' & Two Passages From Eliot's 'The Waste Land', Eric Alan Weinstein, Alan Filreis

Eric Alan Weinstein

Eric Alan Weinstein and Al Filreis spent some time in the Wexler Studio of the Kelly Writers House talking about the problematics of the modern long poem. Can it be taught? Why is it so challenging, despite its central importance? The discussion is intentionally general at first, but soon Eric and Al turn to Eliot's The Waste Land, and in particular to two modally quite distinct passages from the poem. This is a PennSound podcast, number 46 in the ongoing series. To see all episodes at once please see the PennSound archive. To see the series as part of Jacket2 …
