Nicole Ridgway (PhD candidate, University of Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa) will be presenting her paper, "Between Seeing and Saying: Painting as An Event of Thought," as a special CMJ colloquium on Thursday, September 26 at 2pm in 424 Dunn Hall, Nicole is uniquely interdisciplinary scholar with Masters degrees in Anthropology and Performance Studies. She also has extensive doctoral coursework in Performance Studies and African History. He went to university for mathematics and musicology but did not finish those studies. In the late 1970s he took up saxophone and started to compose music. A few years later he discovered his potential as a vocal performer, at first in reciting poetry and later on in improvisations and his own compositions. For almost two decades the voice was his main means for the discovery and development of new sounds. This three-year REU site program at the University of Maine will engage eight undergraduates per year in hands-on research experiences in sensor science and engineering.
