Promoting Academic Success Among African American And Hispanic College Students, Stephanie Jones, Kimberley Gordon-Biddle, Julianna Raskauskas

This study investigates the significant types of social support being offered to Black and Hispanic students attending a diverse institution of higher education with low Black and Hispanic student enrollment. The sample consists of 43 Black and 30 Hispanic students. Results indicate that both Black and Hispanic students believe close-friendship, faculty, and classmate support to impact their academic achievement. Results from this study support previous research and can benefit trainers, administrators, and instructors.

In this paper, we make the case that “empowerment” is still a concept which requires closer scrutiny, for both practical and theoretical reasons. Building on critiques of empowerment and on calls to more consciously address the power relations inherent in adult education, we lay the groundwork for a practical theory of action whereby education practitioners and researchers can work towards salvaging empowerment’s emancipatory potential.

Migration has been controversial in society at large, and in adult education it has far-reaching and underexplored implications for adults’ professional learning. In this symposium we draw on an open conceptualisation of migration which encompasses the physical movement of people across regions and regulatory frameworks, and migrations in professional knowledge effected by changes in policy, and changing conditions of work. The migration of knowledge refers both to the way knowledge is carried by individuals and groups to new locations, and the way knowledge itself migrates to different professional and ethical places. In this paper, we explore the concept of adult education and lifelong learning in the Latin America and Caribbean region and situate it within the context of the CONFINTEA V, Agenda for Adult Education which was more recently reaffirmed by CONFINTEA VI. The first section provides a contextual discussion of how adult education and lifelong learning are conceptualized in the region while the second discusses the region’s response to the agenda for adult education. The third segment highlights some of the associated challenges and concludes with implications for adult educators.

The Phoenix Rising Program is a Life Skills pilot program within the Work First Department at Edmonds Community College, in an urban community north of Seattle, Washington. It is specifically designed for women who are victims of domestic violence and receiving Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF) through the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). The goal of this program is to provide the educational support needed by these women to become stabilized and self-sufficient.
