Do Metacognitive Strategies Improve Student Achievement In Secondary Science Classrooms?, Jaunine Fouché, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D.
Christian Perspectives in Education
Increasing prevalence of high-stakes testing calls for focus on value-added teaching and learning practices. Following is an inquiry regarding metacognitive teaching and learning practices as it pertains to secondary science classrooms. Research shows that the orchestration and inclusion of metacognitive strategies in the science classroom improve achievement under the following preconditions: (1) are pervasively embedded in the educational structure; (2) are part of appropriately rigorous and relevant curriculum; (3) are supported by ‘metacognitive friendly’ teaching strategies; (4) are explicitly practiced by students and teachers; and (5) enable students to take responsibility for their own learning.

The use of data to inform decision-making and monitor individual student progress is recognized as an important, yet elusive practice in early childhood programs. In this article, Data-based Navigation is presented as a five step data-based decision making process designed to help early childhood professionals measure and monitor desired programmatic outcomes. A case study that focuses on the reduction of challenging behaviors is provided to illustrate the process.

This paper is based on an ongoing project that aims to promote future-oriented thinking and pro-activity among university students. The students, as well as the career counsellors in universities, need tools for career planning in order to anticipate and assess the future direction of their work life and their role in society. This project provides a future-oriented simulation tool for students as well as guidance tools for counselling personnel. The scientific outcome of our studies and the project will be a pedagogical model, whilst the practical outcome will be a virtual handbook for career counsellors. The project also predicts some …
