Faeis: A Resource For Natural Resource Faculty And Institutions, J R. Hunnings, W W. Richardson, M A. Marchant

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

The Food and Agricultural Education Information System (FAEIS) compiles nationwide higher education data for agriculture, natural resources, family and consumer sciences/human sciences, veterinary medicine and other related disciplines. These data include undergraduate and graduate student enrollment, degrees awarded at all degree levels, placement and faculty numbers and salaries by rank and discipline. FAEIS is used by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in responding to Congressional inquiries to support higher education and related USDA programs. Higher education administrators use FAEIS data in recruiting and benchmarking students and faculty, as well as institutional planning, and regional and national comparisons. Faculty …

Integrated Forest Policy And Economics, An International Masters Program In Southeast Europe, Margaret A. Shannon, Mersudin Avdibegovic-Sarajevo, Nenad Petovic

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

In 2007, the first FOPER masters program on Integrated Forest Policy and Economics was offered jointly by the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Forestry and the University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Forestry and accredited by not only Bosnia‐Herzegovina and Serbia, but also Albania, Croatia and Macedonia. Twenty‐four students from these countries enrolled in the program and to date nineteen of them have successfully defended their master’s thesis. Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources At Naufrp Institutions: An Update, Terry L. Sharik, Robert J. Lilieholm Mar 2010

Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources At Naufrp Institutions: An Update, Terry L. Sharik, Robert J. Lilieholm

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Undergraduate enrollments in natural resources were analyzed for 30 NAUFRP institutions from around the country, covering the period 1980-2009. Results indicate that the steady downturn in enrollments beginning in the mid 1990s reversed itself in 2003 and continued to increase steadily through the present. Enrollments in the general category of Natural Resources and Environment recently eclipsed those in other more traditional fields of study such as forestry and wildlife and fisheries. Forestry enrollments, which in 1980 constituted nearly half of the total enrollments in all natural resource fields, currently make up less than only about one-fifth of these enrollments. These …

Antimicrobial And Antioxidant Activities Of Essential Oil And Methanol Extract Of Jasminum Sambac From Djibouti, Fatou Abdoul-Latif, Prosper Edou, François Eba, Nabil Mohamed, Adwa Ali, Samatar Djama, Louis-Clément Obame, Mamoudou Hama Dicko

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The essential oil of jasminum sambac from Djibouti was subjected to screening for their possible antioxidant activity by two complementary test systems, namely DPPH free radical scavenging and beta-carotene-linoleic acid assays. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) was used as positive control in both test systems. In the DPPH test system, the IC50 value of essential oil and methanol extract were respectively 7.43 and 2.30 μg/ml. In the beta-carotene-linoleic acid system, oxidation was effectively inhibited by Jasminum sambac, the RAA value of essential oil and methanol extract were respectively 96.6 and 93.9%. When compared to BHT, the essential oil and methanol extract had …

How To Read And Understand Nutrition Facts Labels, Marissa S. Leal

Agricultural Education and Communication

More than half of the world’s population is overweight. The numbers have tripled in Europe, Middle East, China, and Pacific Islands. Adult Americans are about two-thirds overweight. The author studied a brochure created by the FDA on how to read nutrition facts labels and then create their own based on the previous brochure. The author added other …

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi Mar 2010

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

While most chemists agree on what is a metal and what is a non-metal there is a disagreement with respect to what is a metalloid and what is a transition metal. It is believed that this problem can be solved if two new terms are adopted: typical and less typical metals. These new terms will also help reconcile the European Periodic Table versus the North American regarding numbering of groups as well as the IUPAC numbering which could be as well abandoned in favour of group names as will be shown in the manuscript.

Fathi Habashi

The problem of radon generated during the treatment of phosphate rock by sulfuric acid to produce fertilizers can be solved by using nitric acid. In this case radium, which is the source of radon, goes into solution and can be precipitated by a controlled method and safely disposed of. A variety of options are discussed. Text in Farsi with English translation.

The Challenge Of Climate Change In The Classroom, Richard Snow, Mary Snow

Publications

A comprehensive approach to climate change education is necessary to address numerous environmental issues. Such an all-encompassing ecological pedagogy is multifaceted providing an overview of the science behind major global environmental issues within the context of the physical environment of Earth including global climate change, resource extraction, water and air quality, urbanization, geohazards, and pollution. The main goal of the curricula is to engage students in rigorous analyses of data that can be compared with global trends. This research discusses the development of an upper-level college course on Climate Change created as part of an interdisciplinary Honors Seminar Series. The …

Niche Specialization And Conservation Biology Of Cicindela Nevadica Lincolniana, Tierney R. Brosius

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As with many organisms across the globe, Cicindela nevadica lincolniana is threatened with extinction. Understanding ecological factors that contribute to extinction vulnerability and what methods aid in the recovery of those species is essential in developing successful conservation programs. Here we examine behavioral mechanisms for niche partitioning along with improving techniques for captive rearing protocol and increasing public awareness about the conservation of this local insect. Ovipositional selectivity was examined for Cicindela nevadica lincolniana, Cicindela circumpicta, Cicindela togata, Cicindela punctulata, and Cicindela fulgida. Models reflect that these species of co-occurring tiger beetles select different ranges of salinity in which to …

How Our Health Depends On Biodiversity, Eric Chivian M.D., Aaron Bernstein M.D., M.P.H. Jan 2010

How Our Health Depends On Biodiversity, Eric Chivian M.D., Aaron Bernstein M.D., M.P.H.

Ecosystem Disruption & Climate Change

The eminent Harvard biology Professor Edward O.Wilson once said about ants, “We need them to survive, but they don’t need us at all.” The same, in fact, could be said about countless other insects, bacteria, fungi, plankton, plants, and other organisms. This fundamental truth, however, is largely lost to many of us. Rather, we humans often act as if we are totally independent of Nature, as if our driving thousands of other species to extinction and disrupting the life-giving services they provide will have no effect on us whatsoever.

This summary, using concrete examples from our award-winning Oxford University Press …
