Mexican immigration has spawned a public discourse about the private motivations and experiences of immigrants and their families that is shaped by U.S. political and economic interests. This study sought to recover Mexican immigrants’ stories about their experiences and to imagine how adult educators can address this transnational phenomenon.

This paper examines the autobiography of Nelson Mandela Long Walk to Freedom. Using a formulation of critical reflection as the deliberate uncovering and challenging of assumptions concerning power and hegemony, Long Walk to Freedom is subjected to a thematic content analysis using the analytical heuristic of critical reflection.

In this paper, methodological challenges that emerged when conducting research with socially and economically disadvantaged young adults in a semi-rural community are examined. Recruitment and retention issues related to ethics protocols, trust, and economic disadvantage are addressed. Strategies governing bodies can employ to support research with difficult to reach populations are suggested.

This paper presents a preliminary framework for examining a feminist community group’s day to day conflicts, challenges and practical dilemmas, labeled as doublebinds. The research identifies the most commonly experienced dilemmas within a feminist community organization. It then discusses observed coping strategies of selection, vacillation, and source splitting.

The “race-of-interviewer” effect is well documented in the research literature. Research designs that seek to control for these effects do not eliminate other methodological issues such as the impact of social desirability on the responses of White participants, and interviewer-respondent rapport among Black participants.

Data analysis revealed that black women's informal learning in the environmental justice movement, specifically, is shaped by: mentoring relationships, individual and collective experiences, and intergenerational learning.

Thirteen gay men between the ages of 40 and 60 relate stories of their lived experiences, demonstrating both adherence and resistance to heteronormative societal expectations regarding aging gay men. Their stories have implications for adult development and adult education, two fields in which this group has largely been ignored.

This paper discusses a qualitative case study that addressed how an intranet can provide opportunities for learning about an organization’s culture. Four primary findings are discussed with the study concluding that cultural knowledge is conveyed and renewed through intranet in the learning process.

This study explored how a group of farmers developed their mental models of farming. Two themes emerged from the data: (a) Discovery learning plays an important role in model development; (b) When a mental model serves as a barrier to learning an activating event may be necessary for model transformation.

This phenomenological study focused on the lived experience of being a mature adult pursuing a doctoral degree and having a working class background. Findings illuminate the persistent influence of social class on educational experience and the implications for adult education.

Outside The Circle: A Case Study Ofvolunteer Activities Of Adultswith Low Literacy Skills, Donna Anderson, Allan Quigley

This study of volunteer activities among 21 adults with low literacy skills in a social assistance program in Nova Scotia revealed attitudes and motivations relating to volunteerism among program recipients, as well as the six employment support workers who counselled them. Findings indicated that the definitions and understandings of “volunteerism” do not include “informal” volunteerism and client’s non-traditional volunteerism was ultimately discouraged by the counsellors, leading clients to slowly disengage from their community over time.

Community colleges in America developed out of a need to fill the gap between high school or technical education and university-level study. The two-year postsecondary experience which is typically offered at locations that are “community friendly” has attracted persons of color and those with more conservative economic means in ever-increasing numbers. Historically, these marginalized populations have experienced educational inequalities in larger numbers than other groups. As statistics show increasing enrollments from members of these groups, community colleges must provide and improve services that appropriately address both student need and societal demand.
