The central focus of the present study was to examine the relationship between student personal factors (i.e., gender, race, academic performance, career awareness, and socio-economic factors) and the perceptions of secondary school students regarding vocational education. In recent years, traditional vocational programs have not done well throughout the nation. Enrollment within vocational education has dropped to approximately 10%, while enrollment in college preparation courses has increased to over 50%.

This retrospective, qualitative case study examined the complexities of leadership in a community college setting under a single, long-term president. Six critical events were identified by 16 key informants as a basis for reflection on their views of the 23-year presidency of Dr. William Seeker at Florida Keys Community College.

The researcher found a highly participatory leadership model and a college that functions in a less hierarchical manner than is traditionally encountered in community colleges. This qualitative study examined the conceptualization of a school district's attempt to design and implement a high-computer-access (HCA) program. The primary purpose of this study was to examine whether attendance, academic achievement, school climate, student stress, and teacher burnout improved in an inner city, predominantly African American high school after the implementation of a 4 x 4 block schedule. Data concerning student academic achievement and absenteeism in 14 classrooms were gathered from the school's Annual Scholastic Reports. Data concerning the instructional practices of eight teachers were gathered through the teacher version of the Instructional Practices Survey and compared to a student version of the Instructional Practices Survey to determine whether student perception of instructional practices coincided with the teachers' …

This study was grounded in the theory and practice of transformational leadership, where leaders function as moral agents of change as they facilitate values talk (moral discourse) among their constituents. The study took its cue from Rost's call for a new paradigm for leadership ethics that calls for methods of group moral decision making to assess organizational and social ends. The inquiry sought to better understand how leaders engage others in moral conversation and how such processes influence organizational culture and democratic civil society.

The purpose of this project was to provide a training manual for the topic of guided reading within a balanced literacy program for an elementary school. A broader goal was to use collaboration and reflection when providing training in guided reading. The teachers at my school started asking me questions about guided reading: What is guided reading? How do you get started? How can it help all of my students? What does a guided reading lesson look like? I wanted to prepare a workshop that would give them the knowledge they need.

This dissertation examined the efficacy of using minimally trained college undergraduates to tutor third- through fifth-grade students with reading difficulties. Tutors receiving four hours of training in scripted reading program based on the principles of Direct Instruction and emphasizing explicit instruction in phonological awareness and decoding. Thirty-six students from two elementary schools in a large southeastern city in the United States were selected and randomly assigned to treatment (tutoring) or contrast (non-tutoring) conditions. Treatment students received an average of fourteen and a half hours of tutoring over a twelve-week period. Data indicated that university students with minimal training successfully implemented …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the health concerns ofreentry nontraditional women students in a community college in the state oflowa. This group was surveyed in May of2000 at the end of the spring semester. Three hundred nontraditional women students were randomly selected from a population of2,164 names supplied to the researcher by the office of admissions. Due to financial difficulties many communities have consolidated their schools. Consolidation has resulted in larger schools than in the past and, possibly, a more stressful environment for adolescents. This study examined the perceived stress level of adolescents attending schools classified as IA, 2A, 3A, and 4A. The secondary purpose was to investigate gender differences in perceived stress. It was hypothesized that school size would have no effect on perceived stress as reported by adolescents. Also, based on previous literature, it was hypothesized that there would be gender differences in the perceived stress of adolescents.

Research has found that the budget speech contained direct criticisms that negatively affect the target group. The current study examines a 4th grade, African-American male referred for special education eligibility evaluation. Specific academic difficulties cited on the referred included reading, writing, spelling, and math. A behavioral concern included the student's off task behavior and how it might contribute to his academic difficulties. A special education evaluation was conducted that included the procedures of reviewing the student's records, interviewing those of consequence to the evaluation, classroom observations of the student's behavior, and testing of skills. This study examined the effects of storybook reading on children's emergent literacy. Benefits and challenges were discussed which were associated with facilitating literacy through teacher-read storybook events. Also guidelines were presented for teachers to use storybooks as an emergent developmental and instructional method. Conclusions were drawn from the literature and recommendations were made for the future facilitation of storybook reading events.
