Colonial Lessons: Africans' Education In Southern Rhodesia, 1918-1940, Carol Summers

Bookshelf

Studying of the meanings of education, mission identities, and cultural change in Southern Rhodesia, Summers shows how mission-educated Africans negotiated new identities for themselves and their communities within the confines of segregation. From the beginning of the 20th century to the end of the Second World War, Africans in Southern Rhodesia experienced massive changes. Colonialism was systematized, segregation grew rigid and intensive, and economic changes affected every aspect of life from assembling bridewealth to entrepreneurial opportunities. This book provides a challenging portrayal of the possibilities and limits of African agency within the colonial context.

Mission-educated Africans who aspired to elements …

The Potential For Public Opinion To Generate Change In Policy Formation, Peter M. Roguszka Jan 2002

The Potential For Public Opinion To Generate Change In Policy Formation, Peter M. Roguszka

Theses

Towards the end of the Twentieth Century there were a number of examples of change to public policy that were not the product of political debate and public consideration. Rather, they appear to have originated in another less visible, and therefore less open to critique manner. It is argued that it is changes to the general thrust of public opinion that have given validity to these policy changes. The ways in which changes to public opinion are caused to change and by whom are investigated and a theory of 'Australian Public Opinion Change' is developed. This theory is applied to …

Alcohol And Young People: Promoting Benefits And Reducing Risks, Ian Newman Jan 2002

Alcohol And Young People: Promoting Benefits And Reducing Risks, Ian Newman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

For young people, alcohol used in ways prescribed by tradition and indigenous practices are suggested to be of lower risk than those encouraged by modem marketing and western images. Data from the USA and China are presented and discussed to support this hypothesis. Limited data suggest Chinese adolescents may be adopting higher-risk Western-style drinking practices and moving away from traditional drinking styles. It is suggested that policies which promote traditional and indigenous alcohol use should be encouraged and high-risk Western-style drinking practices discouraged.

The Promise And Pitfalls Of Using Imprecise School Accountability Measures, Thomas J. Kane, Douglas O. Staiger Jan 2002

The Promise And Pitfalls Of Using Imprecise School Accountability Measures, Thomas J. Kane, Douglas O. Staiger

Dartmouth Scholarship

In recent years, most states have constructed elaborate accountability systems using school-level test scores. However, because the median elementary school contains only 69 children per grade level, such measures are quite imprecise. We evaluate the implications for school accountability systems. For instance, rewards or sanctions for schools with scores at either extreme primarily affect small schools and provide weak incentives to large ones. Nevertheless, we conclude that accountability systems may be worthwhile. Even in states with aggressive financial incentives, the marginal reward to schools for raising student performance is a small fraction of the potential labor market value for students.

Responding To District Systemic Change: A Case Study Of Campus Leadership Team Member Responses Regarding School-Based Management, Mona Rae Davidson Briggs Jan 2002

Responding To District Systemic Change: A Case Study Of Campus Leadership Team Member Responses Regarding School-Based Management, Mona Rae Davidson Briggs

While student academic achievement was the primary focus, …

Teachers' Use Of High-Stakes Test Results To Improve Instruction: A Review Of Literature, James H. Mcmillan, Susan P. Mckelvey Jan 2002

Teachers' Use Of High-Stakes Test Results To Improve Instruction: A Review Of Literature, James H. Mcmillan, Susan P. Mckelvey

MERC Publications

Across the United States many school districts and state departments of education have embraced high-stakes testing for their public schools and students. This has led to widespread school reform since many students have not reached the standards that the states and/or districts have set. Teachers increasingly focus on making sure that their students have enough knowledge to pass these tests, and some states and districts have made passing scores a requirement for graduation. Many states and districts have invested considerable time aligning their standardized tests with the objectives of the curriculum.

One of the consequences of high-stakes testing is that …
