The Long-Term Effects On High School Seniors Of Learning To Read In Kindergarten, Ralph A. Hanson, Donna M. Farrell
Donna M Farrell
This follow-up study assessed the educational history and current reading proficiencies of 3,959 high school seniors from 24 school districts in 10 U.S. states in 1986. The purpose was to examine the effects, if any, of receiving formal reading instruction in kindergarten. Over one-third of these students attended elementary schools that implemented a carefully developed beginning reading program in their kindergarten classes in 1973. Although the study included kindergarten students from all backgrounds, those from at-risk backgrounds were overrepresented. Three types of information were combined for each student to create a data base for this study: (a) the amount of …

The United States has long been recognized as a world leader in responding to the developmental needs of individuals with mental retardation (Rowitz, 1989). Particular strengths exist in the educational arena, both in traditional settings as well as in the vocational area (Glidden & Zetlin, 1992; Clark & Kolstoe, 1990; Wehmen, 1990; Schlack, McGaughey, & Kiernan, 1989). Because of these strengths, an increasing number of international groups are seeking training opportunities to study these practices. In July 1992, the Cultural Attache at the Embassy of Kuwait in Washington, D.C. issued a request for proposals directed at special education practices in …

Developing Active Citizens: Community Service Learning In Social Studies Teacher Education, Rahima C. Wade
Service Learning, General
How are social studies teacher educators to prepare teachers for working in a society fraught with social, environmental, and economic problems? If the true mission of our profession is active citizenship, we must help our students learn the value of engaging in long-term efforts to revitalize our democratic society and the skills to respond compassionately to those whose daily needs cannot wait for societal transformation. This article is based on the premise that social studies teacher educators are in a unique position to develop future teachers' commitment to giving their students opportunities for active involvement in the community and the …

Teaching History Through Children's Literature: An Integrated Approach For The Fifth Grade Classroom, Tamara Gayle Crook
Teaching History Through Children's Literature: An Integrated Approach For The Fifth Grade Classroom, Tamara Gayle Crook
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
During my teacher education training I have become fascinated with the idea of teaching social studies through historical novels. As a result of this fascination, I chose curriculum development pertaining to this idea as the subject of my honors project. The purpose of this project was for me to develop, teach, and evaluate an integrated unit using historical novels to teach social studies and a variety of other subjects. I selected the American Revolution as the theme of my unit.
In this paper I have included a brief overview of my review of the literature on this topic, the procedures …

Thinking About The Future: Job Opportunities - Hmong Translation, University Of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Employment & Training Institute, Mao Vang
ETI Publications
This curriculum booklet was developed for Milwaukee Public Schools by the Employment and Training Institute. Mao Vang, a UWM student, translated the guide into Hmong for use by families and students at Milwaukee Public Schools. The economy is constantly changing because of new technology, shifting consumer demands, international developments and changing demographic trends. A "snapshot" of the labor market, based on local job openings surveys of thousands of Milwaukee area employers, is presented to help students "learn how to …
