Moon Phases And Piaget, Carolyn Brockway
Moon Phases And Piaget, Carolyn Brockway
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
According to Piaget, a teacher must be aware of the mental development of children in order to present concepts to students in a meaningful way. Too often, the mental processes of children are ignored in teaching. After years of teaching the phases of the moon in the traditional manner of using diagrams in texts; drawings on the board and teacher demonstrations with models, I discovered, several months after instruction, that a majority of my students could not demonstrate the positions of the moon in relation to the sun and earth in explaining moon phases.
The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee
The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In most public schools in Iowa, the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) are administered to grades three through eight. These tests provide a wealth of information concerning achievement in basic academic skills, but they do not provide a direct assessment of achievement of scientific skills. As a result, junior high teachers often have little data for assessing the scientific abilities of their students unless they administer additional tests. Science achievement, per se, is not usually measured in Iowa's public schools until the ninth grade, when students are given the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED).

Educational Handicaps In Chemistry Students, Charles Douglass Jr.
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Research has been carried out to determine which characteristics and abilities are the best predictors of success in a college level chemistry course. Much of the work has centered on achievement measures such as high school chemistry performance, SAT or ACT scores, and the like. Factors other than demonstrated aptitude and ability are also important to success. Some research has looked at the effect of cognitive styles and motivational factors in attempting to predict success. Recent studies in our department indicate that most students who do not perform well may be thought of as suffering from an educational handicap, where …

The Essentials Of Education
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Public concern about basic knowledge and the basic skills in education is valid. Society should continually seek out, define and provide every person with those elements of education that are essential to a productive and a meaningful life. The basic elements of knowledge and skill can be called the essentials of education. In an era dominated by cries for going back to the basics, for minimal competencies and survival skills, educators should reject simplistic solutions and declare a commitment to the essentials of education.
