The Importance Of Hands-On Science: An Exploration Of Scientific Experiences In And Outside Of The Classroom, Jessica M. Schreer May 2024

The Importance Of Hands-On Science: An Exploration Of Scientific Experiences In And Outside Of The Classroom, Jessica M. Schreer

Art of Teaching Thesis - Written

This paper focuses on approaching science education through a lens of hands-on learning. Through observing different teaching environments that allow for this hands-on learning to occur, I hope to shed light on the importance of teaching through exploration, forming connections with nature, and allowing children to find a love for science. Children are naturally curious, experimenters, creative, and passionate and learn when these characteristics are met. Science has similar characteristics. Science is all around us. It focuses on inquiry, discovery, and connection. It is in the air we breathe, it occurs naturally without us having to manipulate it. Through centering …

Lived Experiences Of Instructional Designers Who Designed Online Information Technology Courses With Hands-On Activities, Cheryl Bagshaw Frederick Jan 2021

Lived Experiences Of Instructional Designers Who Designed Online Information Technology Courses With Hands-On Activities, Cheryl Bagshaw Frederick

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As part of the process for designing an online information technology (IT) course, hands-on activities may be included; however, the literature has not readily revealed the best practices and challenges instructional designers (IDs) face with including hands-on activities in an online IT course. Research has shown that hands-on learning increases student performance and engagement and prepares IT students for the workforce. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of IDs in the development of an online IT course when the course included hands-on activities. Constructivism and active learning were used as the conceptual …

Primary Grade Teachers’ Perspectives On Early Literacy Intervention Programs In Urban Title I Schools, Whitney L. Smith Jan 2021

Primary Grade Teachers’ Perspectives On Early Literacy Intervention Programs In Urban Title I Schools, Whitney L. Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Developing a strong foundation in literacy is an essential component of students’ overall academic success. However, first through third grade students in urban Title I schools located in the southeastern region of the United States continued to show limited progress on state literacy assessments. The purpose of this basic qualitative study with interviews was to explore teachers’ perspectives on their experiences with literacy intervention programs. The conceptual framework was based on Senge’s learning organizations and systems thinking theory. Research questions explored literacy intervention program effectiveness and supports teachers needed for ongoing implementation with fidelity. Data from semistructured interviews with 13 …

Development Of An Experiential Leadership Curriculum Using The Absorb, Do, Connect Model, Sarah Norris Jan 2020

Development Of An Experiential Leadership Curriculum Using The Absorb, Do, Connect Model, Sarah Norris

Education Projects

Numerous leadership development programs exist in both the educational and workforce sectors. However, many organizations, specifically nonprofit and governmental agencies, do not have access to hands-on leadership development curriculum that fits their needs. Often, they either send new leadership staff to off-site “leadership training” that does not provide a transfer of learning aspect to be practiced and applied on site,or they create “make-shift” leadership training sessions that do not show validated improvements. The purpose of this project was to develop and betatest anexperiential learning curriculum for emerging leaders using the Absorb, Do, Connect model (Horton, 2012). The curriculum is generic …

Teachers Experiences With Learning Through Making, Kelly Jurkowski Jan 2019

Teachers Experiences With Learning Through Making, Kelly Jurkowski

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Experts describe maker education as activities relating to the construction of artifacts that encourage learning through teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation. Teachers in recent years have been turning to maker-centered learning strategies to develop 21st century skills along with emphasizing strong content knowledge focusing on creation and creativity. Previous maker-based learning research focused primarily on the technology and tools associated with these activities; however, little research exists on the teachers'€™ involvement with these learning strategies. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of teachers currently using maker-centered learning strategies as an instructional practice in grade 5-12 classrooms. …

Hands-On Learning In Primary Grades, Bridgette Marie Megears Jan 2019

Hands-On Learning In Primary Grades, Bridgette Marie Megears

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the understanding of hands on learning in the setting of primary grades. Play and exploration is a natural form of learning that students have been doing all their lives. With the available different types of play, each one can be applied to the classroom setting as well. As kindergarten was first designed to be based around play, it is essential to get back to that form of teaching and learning so that educators are more confident about meeting the needs of all young learners. Play-based learning provides a space where students can grow cognitively as well …

Water Filtration Lesson Plan For Ag In Motion, Kelly C. Dawkins Jun 2015

Water Filtration Lesson Plan For Ag In Motion, Kelly C. Dawkins

Agricultural Education and Communication

The purpose of this project was to create a new lesson plan for the Ag in Motion program. The Ag in Motion program brings science activities to middle schools that may not have the resources to provide hands-on laboratory activities. The organization suggested developing an activity regarding water and its properties. A water filtration activity was developed by working with the Director of Ag in Motion and conducting research regarding hands-on learning. The lesson plan was designed to meet Next Generation Science Standards and show students the importance of clean water supplies. This lesson plan includes a materials and procedure …

The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is an increased positive effect on children's attitude when they are taught about the environment in an outdoor/hands-on setting versus an indoor traditional classroom setting. The study focused on grade four students in the Clark County School District. Half of the group was comprised of students that were taught about the environment using traditional classroom learning materials while the other half consisted of students that were taught using the outdoor/hands-on approach.
