Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn Dec 2015

Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn

Dissertations

Developing social justice awareness is a challenging task. Many educational institutions have limited discourse related to race and equity. This autoethnography examines one leader’s attempt to become a transformational leader by having ongoing conversations about race and racism, applying the individualized transformative model of professional development during conversations, utilizing a peer advisory group for feedback, and reflecting on the results. Findings reveal the most important element for growth is the act of engaging in the conversation regardless of one’s perceived level of competence. The individualized transformative model of professional development was demonstrated to be an effective approach to professional development.

Exploring Elementary Teachers’ Conceptions Of Global Citizenship Through Cross-Cultural Interaction, Sheliah Durham Dec 2015

Exploring Elementary Teachers’ Conceptions Of Global Citizenship Through Cross-Cultural Interaction, Sheliah Durham

All Dissertations

The challenge we face as educators is how to best prepare our students for an increasingly complex and interconnected world. A growing interest in global citizenship education is evidenced by its inclusion in academia related to curriculum development and teacher preparation (Banks, 2008; Merryfield, 2000; 2001; 2003; 2009; Myers, 2006; Nussbaum, 2002). I, following other scholars, argue that global citizenship education provides an opportunity to develop tolerances, appreciation for differences, and global awareness, as well as providing a format to address current and future global issues (Ikeda, D. 2005; Noddings, 2005a; Merryfield 2000; 2007; 2009). Yet, a review of the …

An Examination Of High School Intra-District Funding In Two Virginia School Divisions, Claire R. Le Blanc

Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations

Most states allocate education funds by grant or category at the district level, and most districts distribute funds at the school level. 1 Differences between allocations from the states to the districts and distribution methods from the districts to the schools can lead to unintended consequences in funding equity. This may undermine the purpose of the funding policies developed by state legislatures. Most states use a formula that provides a foundation funding amount to the district for each student. In addition, most states typically provide supplementary categorical funding to the district based on demographic characteristics of students (such as free …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-Splost) On Capital Outlay Expenditures In Georgia School Districts, Robert Bradley Benson

Dissertations

In 1996, legislators approved an amendment to the Georgia Constitution which granted local Boards of Education the authority to seek voter approval for a 1% Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-SPLOST). Revenues from E-SPLOST were to be used exclusively for capital expenses or to retire debt incurred as a result of capital expenses. This study examined eight years of per pupil expenditure data to determine the impact of the E-SPLOST.

The data indicated that differences in per pupil expenditures for instructional equipment were significant, revealing a reduction post E-SPLOST. Further, expenditures for new construction and improvements to …

Knowing Me, Knowing You: The Dilemma Of Diversity Courses In Higher Education, Marian Derlet Jan 2015

Knowing Me, Knowing You: The Dilemma Of Diversity Courses In Higher Education, Marian Derlet

Doctor of Education (EdD)

American institutions of higher education are increasingly addressing the issue of diversity. Many colleges list diversity as one of their institutional values, while others not only name diversity as a value, but also require diversity courses. This paper examines the difficulty posed by these objectives due to a lack of agreement and/or understanding of the term diversity. Traditional notions of diversity include differences of race, religion, and ethnicity. However in the 21st century, the term diversity now includes such categories as age, socio-economic status, and disability. This paper argues that as college students seek to define diversity for themselves, they …

This dissertation examines the perceptions of the participants in the Institute of Engaged Principal Leadership at the start and conclusion of their first year of sessions. The study used a single case study qualitative research approach incorporating semi-structured interviews questions, researcher observations, and review of documents throughout the 2012-2013 initial year of the Institute.
