Abstract

The International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum recognizes approaches to learning skills(ATLS) as an integral part of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework. This vital element of learning is designed to be embedded in the program standards and practices of the inquiry-based IB curriculum. After an evaluation visit by the IB school visit team members in 2017, a report was shared with the international primary school (IPS) study site located in Southeast Asia, which indicated that teachers were encountering challenges in consistent integration of ATLS to enhance transdisciplinary learning, which is the problem of this study. This task-based interview study examined the development of prerequisite skills and concepts and calculus skill and concepts of students who entered a first-semester calculus course with a low level of prerequisite skills. The participants in this study completed three task-based interviews with two tasks in each interview. A need for current science education has emerged in enhancing students’ deep involvement in scientific practices in core disciplines. Students are encouraged to improve crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas through authentic science practice through constructing theories about the real world, generating questions, conducting investigations, revising theories, and communicating and collaborating. A new education model addresses these needs by transforming classrooms into collaborative knowledge building communities. Several recent studies have revealed that there is increasing individualism and declining interest in politics and civic engagement among college students. Accordingly, many scholars called for reinvigorating the civic mission of higher education. This thesis study examines academic service-learning as an effective pedagogy for promoting students’ civic engagement. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the best ways of integrating service-learning into the curricula of undergraduate students. The aim of this practicum was to eliminate primary grade students' negative perception that mathematics is difficult and to assist students in developing and understanding of number concepts and computational skills. Students in the targeted group were heterogeneously grouped into teams of three. Students were given a math pretest before implementation. Determine skilled deficient areas and a post-test after implementation to define skill improvement areas. Students were also administered a pre/post attitudinal survey to ascertain the students attitude toward before, and after the implementation. The outcome of this practicum was encouraging.
