The Impact Of The Digital Divide On First-Year Community College Students, Malinda Mansfield Jan 2017

The Impact Of The Digital Divide On First-Year Community College Students, Malinda Mansfield

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Some students do not possess the learning management system (LMS) and basic computer skills needed for success in first-year experience (FYE) courses. The purpose of this quantitative study, based on the Integrative Learning Design Framework and theory of transactional distance, was to identify what basic computer skills and LMS skills are needed for first-year students to be successful in FYE courses. A survey was offered to 368 first-year students and 47 first-year instructors at a large Midwestern community college to compare instructors' perceptions of the computer literacy skill levels necessary for FYE student success with FYE students' self-reported current computer …

Adult Learners And Technology: Understanding The Digital Divide In Developmental Writing Courses, Carleta Laneese Aikens-Alston May 2016

Adult Learners And Technology: Understanding The Digital Divide In Developmental Writing Courses, Carleta Laneese Aikens-Alston

Ed.D. Dissertations

This study investigated computer literacy of nontraditional and traditional adult learners in a two-year community college. The study included 276 participants enrolled in developmental writing courses. Participants were administered a computer literacy survey and demographic form to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Mixed methodology and convergent design, in particular, were used to analyses data. Quantitative analysis was used to determine correlations between three constructs: computer literacy scores, age, and performance. Qualitative analysis was used to determine attitudes about receiving supplemental technology training based on the three constructs. Computer literacy score and age did show a significant inverse correlation. In addition, …

Comparing Basic Computer Literacy Self-Assessment Test And Actual Skills Test In Hospital Employees, Jolly Peter Isaac Jan 2015

Comparing Basic Computer Literacy Self-Assessment Test And Actual Skills Test In Hospital Employees, Jolly Peter Isaac

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A new hospital in United Arab Emirates (UAE) plans to adopt health information technology (HIT) and become fully digitalized once operational. The hospital has identified a need to assess basic computer literacy of new employees prior to offering them training on various HIT applications. Lack of research in identifying an accurate assessment method for basic computer literacy among health care professionals led to this explanatory correlational research study, which compared self-assessment scores and a simulated actual computer skills test to find an appropriate tool for assessing computer literacy. The theoretical framework of the study was based on constructivist learning theory …

Teaching Elementary School Teachers To Use Logo With Gifted Students, Jeanette Christie Lis Jun 1988

Teaching Elementary School Teachers To Use Logo With Gifted Students, Jeanette Christie Lis

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author addressed the problem of meeting the needs of elementary school gifted students in the mainstream computer literacy instruction. The objectives of the practicum were to provide the teachers with a knowledge of Logo commands and concepts and to help the teachers develop a positive attitude toward the use of Logo. Twelve workshop sessions were held for the target group of eight teachers. The teachers received instruction in the computer programming language Logo. A study guide and sample programs, developed by this author, served as the basis for instruction. The guide contains theoretical background information about Logo plus related …

Development Of A Computer Program To Improve Sixth Graders Use Of A Local Area Network, Shirley S. Castoldi May 1988

Development Of A Computer Program To Improve Sixth Graders Use Of A Local Area Network, Shirley S. Castoldi

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum was developed in response to a concern that a week-long Orientation Program did not eliminate the difficulties experienced by sixth graders "signing- on" the school’s Local Area Network. Class printouts demonstrated a noticeable discrepancy between the number of skills students were programmed to complete and the actual number completed. To remedy this situation, a computer program was developed to introduce practicum participants to networking; to explain the "signing-on" process in a clear, concise way; and to demonstrate the proper use of the computer control keys needed to successfully use the networking software. Results showed marked improvement in the …

Achieving Student Mastery Learning Of Fifth Grade Minimal Standards For Computer Literacy Through The Development And Use Of A Computer Literacy Program, Cheryl Temple Dafeldecker Jun 1987

Achieving Student Mastery Learning Of Fifth Grade Minimal Standards For Computer Literacy Through The Development And Use Of A Computer Literacy Program, Cheryl Temple Dafeldecker

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

At the practicum site classroom teachers were not teaching nor were they prepared to teach, the State Computer Literacy Minimal Standard objectives. Teachers were not including computer curriculum in their lesson plans and cited the lack of structured curricular materials, experience, and training as their rationale. The practicum targeted fourth and fifth grade students, with an objective of 85 percent attaining mastery on the tested minimal standards and related objectives after completion of a Computer Literacy Program (CLP), and measured by an objective-based posttest. In order to accomplish this, teachers needed exposure to the field of compute education, particularly computer …

Improving Instructional Efficiency Through The Implementation Of Computerized Management And Prescriptive Analysis, Thomas V. Pisano Sep 1986

Improving Instructional Efficiency Through The Implementation Of Computerized Management And Prescriptive Analysis, Thomas V. Pisano

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author implemented a computerized management system to improve instructional efficiency within the classroom. A variety of computer application software were used for grading and prescriptive analysis in the fifth grade classroom. The teacher developed a data base of student information, and parental contact was conducted via grade sheet reports and word processed form letters. Keyboard skills were taught to the students during their Computer Science and Language arts lab periods so that word processing skills could be introduced. No textbook was used for language arts instruction. The teacher modeled the writing process on the word processors and the students …

Designing And Implementing A Computer Literacy Course For Academically Excellent Disadvantaged Intermediate Elementary Students, Ronny A. Einbinder Mar 1986

Designing And Implementing A Computer Literacy Course For Academically Excellent Disadvantaged Intermediate Elementary Students, Ronny A. Einbinder

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author designed and implemented a computer literacy course for academically excellent disadvantaged intermediate elementary students. The author introduced the students to a wide range of computer related skills. This information was presented in an introductory manner in order to acquaint students with the varied uses of the computer in today's technological society. The program's aims were to teach computer literacy to academically high achieving students who had little or no previous computer knowledge or experience, to provide computer time for students whose environmental background has denied them equal access to computers, and to build higher level thinking skills. The …
